Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders

Lincoln in the Bardo

2 stars

This book had an interesting premise, but ultimately I didn’t find it enjoyable. It’s set in a graveyard the night that Lincoln’s young son Willie is buried. The story takes place in one night and is a series of conversations between ghosts that are trying to encourage Willie to “move on” from the graveyard. A Mortal Likeness (Victorian Mystery #2) by Larah Joh Rowland

A mortal Likeness

3 stars

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is the second book in a series, but is a stand-alone mystery. You don’t have to have read the first book (which I haven’t) to enjoy this book. This was a fairly entertaining murder mystery. Continue reading “A Mortal Likeness (Victorian Mystery #2) by Larah Joh Rowland”

The Library at the Edge of the World by Felicity Hayes-McCoy

Library at edge of world

This is a nice, quiet book that is an easy read. Hannah fled her small hometown for London after school. She married a successful and wealthy lawyer, had a daughter, and lived a sophisticated life. Years later when she discovers he’s being unfaithful, she packs her daughter up and moves back to her small hometown in Ireland. Operator Down (Pike Logan #12) by Brad Taylor

Operator Down

3 stars

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is a very fast-paced, action intensive book. Pike Logan and his team are tracking an illegal arms dealer in Tel Aviv. They stumble upon an attempt to kill one of their friends, ex-Israeli agent Shoshana. After thwarting the attempt, they discover that her husband Aaron is missing after conducting an operation looking into a scheme in the Israeli Diamond Exchange. This leads them to uncover a conspiracy to overthrow a democratic government in Africa. Continue reading “Operator Down (Pike Logan #12) by Brad Taylor”

The Late Shift (Renee Ballard, #1) by Michael Connelly

The late show

4 stars

I really enjoyed this book. This book introduces a new series regular, Det. Renee Ballard. She filed a sexual harassment complaint against a popular Lt. Her partner witnessed the incident, but refused to back her story and the complaint was denied. As punishment, Ballard was transferred out of the prestigious unit and moved to the night shift in Hollywood. There, she starts many investigations, but at the end of her shift has to turn them over to the day shift, never getting to follow through with any of them. The Queen of Blood (The Queens of Renthia, #1) by Sarah Beth Durst

the queen of blood

4 stars

I really enjoyed this book. It starts off a bit slow, but eventually picks up and roars to a satisfying ending.

Humans share their world with spirits. The spirits control the air, earth, fire, ice, water and wood. The spirits help build the villages and cities, make food grow, feed the animals. Humans need the spirits to survive. But spirits hate humans and want nothing more than to kill every human alive. In the kingdom of Renthia the people are protected from the spirits by their Queen. She controls the spirits and prevents them from harming humans. Because the Queen is vital to human’s survival, young girls that can control the spirits are trained to be the new queen (an heir) so that there is always a potential queen available if, and when, the queen dies. Scones and Scoundrels (Highland Bookshop Mystery #2) by Molly MacRae

Scones and Scoundrels

3 stars – released 1-2-18

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is the second book in the series. I haven’t read the first book, but didn’t feel like I missed too many things because of that. There were enough references to the last book to fill in the missing pieces. This was a fun, easy, quick “cozy” mystery read. I’ve only read a couple of these kinds of books so don’t have a large frame of reference, but this book was pretty good.
