Book four in this space opera saga finds Hadrian exiled once again. The war with the Cielcin is not going well, so he’s tasked with yet another impossible task by the Emperor. He’s asked to be an emissary to the Lothrian Commonwealth to try to convince them to join the war. The Lothrian are a somber people with regimented rules that basical quash any individuality or free choice. Hadrian knows it’s an almost impossible task, but he had no idea it could be so dangerous. Where ever Hadrian goes, trouble and danger follows, and this time is no different.
It’s hard to talk about this book without spoilers, but be prepared to be depressed. A lot. The book is definitely a downer, in the best way, and makes the reader feel the despair and desperation someone must feel when faced with such overwhelming obstacles. I listened to this book as well, and the narrator did a fantastic job portraying the anxiety, frustration, and danger Hadrian finds himself dealing with during almost the entirety of the book.
On to the next book in the series….
