Poison’s Kiss (Poison’s Kiss #1) by Breeana Shields

Poison's kiss

3 stars

This is an ok book. Marinda is a visha kanya, a poison maiden. Her kiss is deadly and she is trained from a young age to be an assassin for the good of the country. While she doesn’t like what she does, she knows that if she resists, her little brother Mani will not get the life-saving treatment her handler gives him. When she is told to kill a boy that she’s fallen in love with, however, Marinda begins to question her orders. Continue reading “Poison’s Kiss (Poison’s Kiss #1) by Breeana Shields” →

The Reluctant Queen (Queens of Renthia, #2) by Sarah Beth Durst

the reluctant queen

4 stars

I really enjoyed the first book in the series and was nervous that the second book wouldn’t be as good. I shouldn’t have been concerned because this book was just as good as the first. The story picks up shortly after Daleina is made queen. She has grown into her new role and is keeping the humans in her country safe from the spirits. When it finally seems that Daleina can relax for a moment, she suddenly falls ill and discovers she is dying. If she dies without an heir, the spirits will rip her country apart and kill all of its citizens. Continue reading “The Reluctant Queen (Queens of Renthia, #2) by Sarah Beth Durst” →

The Queen of Blood (The Queens of Renthia, #1) by Sarah Beth Durst

the queen of blood

4 stars

I really enjoyed this book. It starts off a bit slow, but eventually picks up and roars to a satisfying ending.

Humans share their world with spirits. The spirits control the air, earth, fire, ice, water and wood. The spirits help build the villages and cities, make food grow, feed the animals. Humans need the spirits to survive. But spirits hate humans and want nothing more than to kill every human alive. In the kingdom of Renthia the people are protected from the spirits by their Queen. She controls the spirits and prevents them from harming humans. Because the Queen is vital to human’s survival, young girls that can control the spirits are trained to be the new queen (an heir) so that there is always a potential queen available if, and when, the queen dies. Nightblade’s Vengeance (Blades of the Fallen #1) by Ryan Kirk

Nightblades Vengeance

4 stars

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest opinion.

This is a really good start to a new fantasy series. This is the first book that I’ve read by this author, but certainly won’t be the last. The story is set in a “Kingdom” that reminds me of feudal China or Japan. The King is sick and dying with no heir. Members from the three ruling families sit on the King’s Council. Each family tries to maneuver to take over the throne upon the King’s death. Continue reading “Nightblade’s Vengeance (Blades of the Fallen #1) by Ryan Kirk” →

Warcross (Warcross #1) by Marie Lu

Warcross

4.5 stars

Wow. What a great book! I LOVED the Legends book series but was pretty disappointed in the Young Elites series, so I am relieved that the author I loved from the Legends series is back.

Warcross is a game that has taken over the world. Millions of people spend all of their free time in the virtual world, while others use it to try to make money. As with most things, there is also a dark side. Emika Chen, a teenage hacker, struggles to make ends meet by working as a bounty hunter tracking down people that illegally gamble on Warcross. Facing eviction, Emika takes a chance and hacks herself into the International Warcross Championships, a world-wide event watched by millions. Once in the game, however, something goes wrong and she enters the action of the game. Her identity is out and she becomes an overnight sensation. Weave a Circle Round by Kari Maaren

weave a circle round

3 stars

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book was hard to rate. The writing is good, but the story didn’t interest me. The story centers on Freddy, a young girl that tries very hard not to be noticed. Her sister Mel is very confidant and brilliant. Her stepbrother Roland is deaf and not a fan of Freddy. He spends most of his time avoiding her and creating roleplaying games for his group of friends. Continue reading “Weave a Circle Round by Kari Maaren” →

Jazz is a young girl on the moon’s only settlement, Artemis. She is barely scrapping by working as a courier and a black market smuggler. She is very bright and always working the angles. Jazz is estranged from her father and has had her share of heartaches. When she’s given the opportunity of a lifetime to finally get ahead of the game by committing a risky crime, she jumps at the chance. She just didn’t count on quite so many complications.
