Nerd Girl Loves Books

I enjoyed this book, which is the first in a new historical fiction romance series. It follows a family of 3 sisters who are the illegitimate daughters of a wealthy NYC man who is a member of one of the founding families of the city. Their father refuses to recognize them, but when his mother dies, she leaves each girl a huge inheritance. Their father sees this as a way to get the women out of NYC, so he states they can’t inherit until they find suitable husbands out of the City. So, the girls head to England to find a titled husband.

This is a beautifully written book inspired by real accounts of the Coventry Blitz of WWII. It’s set in the early 1940’s but has flashbacks to before WWI and during WWI. Amos and Lady Charlotte were childhood friends that supported each other’s dreams. Amos loves books and yearns to further his education, but as the son of a farmer, he knows that will never happen. Charlotte loves playing the cello but her mother forbids her from playing, especially in front of other people. Each is in love with the other, but when they age Amos has more responsibilities on the farm and Charlotte is forced into a loveless marriage with the Earl of Harcourt. She has one daughter, Eden, who is fiery, outspoken, and fearless. An attorney from the U.S. visits the town and tells Eden he’s suing her, which brings up family issues.

This is a wonderful Regency romance with plenty of warmth and heart. Viola, the MC, is the governess to an incorrigible fourteen old girl, Felicity, who is a delightful and refreshing character. Her antics, particularly when she and Hunt’s sister Isabell scheme to get Viola and Hunt together, are a hoot. They add much levity and laughter to the story. Viola has been in love with the Duke of Huntington, Hunt, since the moment she saw him. But she knows her place in society and silently loves him from afar. Viola is smart, capable and loving. Her relationship with Felicity is warm, loving, but firm.

You guys, this book is so cute! It’s a fun and flirty Regency England historical romance about what happens when the tables are turned against men’s complete control over courtships. Diana Boyle is a wealthy widow who has no desire to get married again. She discovers that she’s listed in a directory of rich, single women to help younger sons without a fortune score a rich wife. Diana is furious and confronts Maxwell, the man that wrote the list.
