Skyhunter (Skyhunter #1) by Marie Lu

Rating: 4 out of 5.

4.5 stars

This is a fantastic first book in an exciting YA Fantasy/SciFi series. There is a strong, flawed female lead, complicated relationships, creepy monsters and plenty of action. It’s a quick read and I couldn’t put it down.

The Bone Shard Daughter (The Drowning Empire #1) by Andrea Stewart

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is a very good first book in an exciting new fantasy series. It has interesting characters, multiple storylines and focuses more on magic than sword fighting. I’m not a huge fan of books focused on magic, but this isn’t the wizard-wielding type of magic. It’s much more subtle and sinister.

Monstre: Volume One by Duncan Swan

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Holy hell – what did I just read?? This is a fantastic first book in a new apocalyptic Science Fiction/Horror book series. It has an explosive beginning (literally) and doesn’t let up until the frenetic cliffhanger ending.

Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is an entertaining, funny romp through the apocalypse with S.T., a fowl-mouthed crow, and his owner’s trusty dim-witted dog, Dennis.

A Beautifully Foolish Endeaver (The Carls #2) by Hank Green

Rating: 3 out of 5.

I loved the first book and was very excited when the sequel came out, but this one was not as captivating. It’s well-written but it didn’t grab my attention as much as the first book and I didn’t like the story as much.

Ink & Sigil (Ink & Sigil #1) by Kevin Hearne

Ink & Sigil

4 stars (release date 8-25-2020)

This is a creative, funny, action-packed fantasy about an elderly sigil agent that can craft magical spells using special inks and symbols. Continue reading “Ink & Sigil (Ink & Sigil #1) by Kevin Hearne”

Cry of Metal & Bone (Earthsinger Chronicles #3) by L. Penelope

cry of metal & bone

4 stars

Once again we are treated with an exciting, action-packed book about the struggle of Elsira and Lagrimar, two nations that have been at war for centuries. The book starts fast and doesn’t slow down until the satisfying cliffhanger. (I mistakenly thought this was the last book in the series, but no, we will be treated to at least one more book!) Continue reading “Cry of Metal & Bone (Earthsinger Chronicles #3) by L. Penelope”

The Testaments (The Handmaid’s Tale #2) by Margaret Atwood

The testaments

3 stars

I was really looking forward to reading this follow-up to The Handmaid’s Tale, but I sadly have to agree with a lot of reviewers that felt this book was not necessary. There were certainly sparks of greatness in this book, unfortunately just not enough of them. Continue reading “The Testaments (The Handmaid’s Tale #2) by Margaret Atwood”

The Kingdom of Liars (The Legacy of the Mercenary Kings #1) by Nick Martell

the kingdome of liars

3.5 stars (release date June 23, 2020)

This is a good first book in a new fantasy series. The concept is interesting but the book’s pacing is uneven, and at 608 pages, it needed better editing. Continue reading “The Kingdom of Liars (The Legacy of the Mercenary Kings #1) by Nick Martell”
