I really enjoyed this book. I’ve read other books from these authors and really enjoyed them, and this book didn’t disappoint. I read it in two days!

Our two main characters are traveling through hyperspace on a luxury spaceliner named Icarus. Lilac is the 16 year old daughter of the richest man in the universe. Her father is overprotective and doesn’t let Lilac go anywhere alone. She has bodyguards with her 24/7 and he actively discourages any boy from showing interest in his daughter. Lilac, never knowing if someone wants to be near her for her money, influence or access to her father, has built up a protective wall around her to keep everyone at a distance. I started reading this book before I realized it is book 9 in the Alex Verus book series by the author. I haven’t read any other books in this series, but was still able to follow the storyline and enjoy the book. This was a very good urban fantasy book. Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel

This is our June book club book. My thoughts about the book? Meh. It was interesting insomuch as the story was told as a graphic novel. Other than that, I didn’t really find anything any more compelling than any other books about dysfunctional families. Alison is gay. When she tells her family, she discovers that her father is also gay but was never allowed to live freely as a gay man. In the story the author reflects on certain events in the past and tries to decipher the meaning. This book became a big deal because it was banned by some public libraries and other outlets. As autobiographies go, I wasn’t too impressed and didn’t find the story very interesting. There are much better books on the subject than this one.

Silver Stars (Front Lines, #2) by Michael Grant

I love this book series!! The second book is just as good as the first. The story picks up shortly after the events of Front Lines. It’s the summer of 1943. The American forces have now set their sights on Sicily and Italy. Frangie, Rainy, and Rio are no longer green soldiers. Each one knows the horror of combat and the lengths they will go to save themselves and their fellow soldiers. While North Africa was bad, the upcoming battles will be so much worse. Women soldiers are becoming a symbol for equality, with the three women leading the way.

The story is so compelling and I couldn’t put it down. I found myself reading late into the night. If you haven’t started reading this series, do so now!!

I received a free sneak-peek of the first few chapters of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is an interesting and intriguing YA book. The story follows two main characters that have never met, but share a similar misfortune in falling for the wrong people.

Quiet, shy Elyse is cast as the lead in the school play. She is not used to the spotlight and her insecurities make her vulnerable. Gabe is dating a headstrong popular girl that treats him poorly. He tries to break up with her, but she’s having none of that. Just when the story was heating up, I ran out of chapters.

I’m definitely intrigued enough to want to read the rest of the book. I will complete this review once I do.

Citadel: The Concordant Sequence by Matthew S. Cox

The first 20-25% of this book was very slow and I almost gave up on it. Fortunately, I stuck with it and was not disappointed. The author provides sufficient world-building, although most of the characters other than Kiera are pretty flimsy. Once the action picked up, the story kept my attention. I was also relieved to discover that this is a stand-alone book with a beginning, middle and end. This is a satisfying find in a genre overloaded with trilogies and multiple-book series. Wow. What a great finish to a really fun series. I loved the first books, Illuminae (The Illuminae Files #1) by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff and Gemina (The Illuminae Files #2) by Aime Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. I was very excited to see how the series concluded, but also sad because I didn’t want it to end. Hopefully these authors will conjure up another exciting series for us to read in the future.

Kady, Ezra, Hanna, and Nik successfully defeated the soldiers sent to jump station Heimdall and were able to escape alive. Instead of being able to relax after a grueling battle, they find themselves with 2,000 refugees on the container ship, Mao. The ship is built for a lot less people and resources are scarce. They decide to go back to Kerenza but don’t know what awaits them there, if anything. Adding to their plight, the adults on Mao dismiss the contributions and abilities of our ragtag team, leaving them angry and frustrated.
