Goodbye Stranger by Blake Rudman

Rating: 3 out of 5.

It’s an exciting psychological contemporary thriller about a retired NFL quarterback and his wife and children.

The book alternates POVs between five characters, providing the reader with a well-rounded view of all the moving parts of the story. Danielle believes she has the perfect life with her successful husband and twins. But when her husband becomes distant, disappearing for days without contact, she starts to suspect he’s having an affair. She never dreamed the truth would be so horrific and unimaginable. I liked Danielle and the author did a great job depicting her struggle to love and trust her husband, but to also not just turn a blind eye to issues she notices. She loves her life and doesn’t want to believe that they’re something so wrong that would destroy everything she’s known.

The Legacy of Longdale Manor by Carrie Turansky

Rating: 3 out of 5.

This is a sweet Historical Romance, Inspirational Fiction told in dual timelines. In 2012, art historian Gwen Morris travels to England’s Lake District to appraise the paintings and antiques of an old family friend, hoping to prove herself to her prestigious grandfather. She meets the owner’s grandson David and initially is concerned that the plans he has for his grandmother’s house serves his needs more than his grandmother’s, but eventually those concerns dissipate. The Secrets of Jane: Forgotten (Improper Bastards #1) by Charlotte Mallory

Rating: 4 out of 5.

4.5 stars

Wow. wow. wow. wow. What a fantastic book! I don’t read many dark fantasy romance books, but maybe I should start. Jane is a young woman that fled Skull Row 10 years ago, home to thieves and killers and mercenary rulers called Zeniths. The village she’s hiding out in is set aflame and she’s captured by one of the most ruthless mercenaries, Soren. His job is to return her to Skull Row to face the Council. They haven’t told him why, which he doesn’t like. Most of the book is their journey back to Skull Row until the climatic cliffhanger. It’s a vicious story, filled with a lot of action and fighting. It’s definitely not for the squeamish.

Standing Dead (Timber Creek K-9 Mystery, #8) by Margaret Mizushima

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is another great mystery focusing on Deputy Mattie Cobb. She and her sister travel to Mexico to visit her mother, but find her gone. She returns home to find a note on her door telling her to find “him” among the standing dead. The sheriff’s race to the forest and they find a dead man tied to a tree. Mattie knows the man, and when she finds another note telling her that her mother is in bad shape, Mattie knows she has to do whatever it takes to save her.

Murder in the Family by Cara Hunter

Rating: 3 out of 5.

This is a pretty good epistolary mystery written exclusively as if reading a movie script. In December 2003, Luke Ryder, the stepfather of acclaimed filmmaker Guy Howard (then aged 10), was found dead in the garden of their suburban family home. Luke was babysitting Guy. Luke’s two teenage step-daughters found him dead in the back yard, while Guy slept in his room. The children’s mother was a suspect but she was at a party that night with a solid alibi. His murder remains unsolved.

An Unsuitable Heiress by Jane Dunn

Rating: 3 out of 5.

This is a cute historical romance set in Regency England. I love MC Corinna (Cory)! She is smart, capable, loving, determined, and doesn’t let obstacles get in the way of what she wants. She bravely flees the countryside to go to London in search of her father. She planned her flight perfectly and escapes dressed as a boy. As luck would have it she meets up with the other MCs when they rescue her from a fight.

An Unholy Affair (Foxbrooke #2) by Evie Alexander

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Will he show her heaven, or take her straight to hell?

Evie has done it again! I absolutely loved this book. Eveline is the vicar at Foxbrooke. She secretly reads cozy romance novels and dreams of finding her dream man & having a family but her job always gets in the way. She briefly met a man (Jack) a year ago that made her soul sing & there was an instant attraction. Trouble is, he is a male escort and mistook her for a new client. Discovering his mistake, he abruptly left Eveline at the bar, but she’s been haunting his every thought ever since.

After That Night (Will Trent, #11) by Karin Slaughter

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is book 11 of the Will Trent mystery/thriller series and it was great. This is the first book I’ve read in the series, but having watched the tv series, I didn’t feel lost reading it. Plus, there is enough backstory in the book to help the reader understand what is going on. The book can be read as a stand-alone mystery.

A Beautiful Disguise (The Imposters, #1) by Roseanna M. White

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is an interesting and twisty Edwardian historical fiction romance/mystery. Lady Marigold and her younger brother Yates inherited a fun, albeit bankrupt, estate from their father. To pay the bills, they formed an anonymous exclusive detective agency serving the elite of England. Sir Merritt is working in the War Office precursor to MI5 when an agent goes missing after leaving a one word missive – the name of a connected nobleman. He retains Marigold and Yates’ agency to find out information he’s not able to discover on his own. Will the trio uncover a traitorous plot that threatens England in time?
