The Kingdom of Liars (The Legacy of the Mercenary Kings #1) by Nick Martell

the kingdome of liars

3.5 stars (release date June 23, 2020)

This is a good first book in a new fantasy series. The concept is interesting but the book’s pacing is uneven, and at 608 pages, it needed better editing. Continue reading “The Kingdom of Liars (The Legacy of the Mercenary Kings #1) by Nick Martell”

The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates

the water dancer

2 stars

Hiram Walker’s mother is a slave and his father is the plantation owner. Because his mother is a slave, he is also one. The Obsidian Tower (Rooks and Ruin #1) by Melissa Caruso

the obsidian tower

4 stars

This is a very good first book in a new fantasy series about magic, loneliness, vengeance and power. Clocking in at 448 pages, it slowly builds tension and intrigue before exploding to a satisfying cliffhanger. Continue reading “The Obsidian Tower (Rooks and Ruin #1) by Melissa Caruso”

The Fiery Crown (Forgotten Empires #2) by Jeffe Kennedy

the fiery crown

3 stars

This is the second book in a fun fantasy series that combines magic, wizards, sword fighting, and evil emperors. Conri and Lia form a fragile alliance to take down Anure, but still have a long way to go in communicating with each other besides falling into bed. They experience a small amount of character development, but almost no other character in the book does. Continue reading “The Fiery Crown (Forgotten Empires #2) by Jeffe Kennedy”

The Orchid Throne (Forgotten Empires #1) by Jeffe Kennedy

the orchid throne

3 stars

This was an ok first book in a promising fantasy book series. The book is marketed as a “Fantasy Romance”, which is a new one for me. Continue reading “The Orchid Throne (Forgotten Empires #1) by Jeffe Kennedy”

The Fire in the Glass by Jacquelyn Benson

The fire in the glass

4 stars

This was a very good historical fiction fantasy book set in 1914 London about a young girl that has visions of the future but is powerless to do anything to prevent the tragedies she sees. The book immediately captured my attention and I wound up reading it in one sitting. Continue reading “The Fire in the Glass by Jacquelyn Benson”

Queen of the Unwanted (The Women’s War #2) by Jenna Glass

queen of the unwanted

3.5 stars

This is the second book in a fantasy series about how three different women – one a queen, one the crown princess of a new principality, and one the Abbess of an abbey – try to lead their people, and help women take back power over their bodies and their lives that had previously been denied by the men that ruled over them. Continue reading “Queen of the Unwanted (The Women’s War #2) by Jenna Glass”

The Women’s War (The Women’s War #1) By Jenna Glass

the women's war

3.5 stars

This is a pretty good new fantasy series focused on what happens when women previously treated like chattel in a male dominated world are given the power to alter and improve their lives. Continue reading “The Women’s War (The Women’s War #1) By Jenna Glass”

Shorefall (Founders, #2) by Robert Jackson Bennett

shorefall

3.5 stars

I loved Foundryside, the first book in this series, and anxiously awaited the second. So, when I was finally able to read and review this book, I was giddy with excitement. Sadly, it fell into the all-too-common “second book” funk. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still good, but it fell short in comparison to book one. Continue reading “Shorefall (Founders, #2) by Robert Jackson Bennett”
