Crush the King (Crown of Shards #3) by Jennifer Estep

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is the final book in this fantastic Fantasy trilogy. Queen Everleigh Blair of Bellona has survived the mass murder of her royal family, trained and become a fierce gladiator, learned to harness her magic, usurped the traitor that took her family’s crown, become a queen and survived multiple assassination attempts. She’s tired. And she’s pissed.

Warrior’s Ransom (The First Argentine’s #2) by Jeff Wheeler

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is another great book in this YA Fantasy series. If you haven’t read the first book yet, you have time to pick it up and read, and then read this one before the third book comes out in September 2021.

The Shadow of the Gods (The Bloodsworn Saga, #1) by John Gwynne

Rating: 4 out of 5.

4.5 stars

Wow. What a fantastic first book in a new, exciting epic fantasy series. It’s got everything you want in an epic fantasy; Norse mythology, gods, monsters, dragons, swords, battles, mercenaries, stupid and/or evil rulers, skilled fighters, cowards, plucky former slaves out for vengeance, quests, and much more. The book ends on a great cliffhanger and I can’t wait to see what the author will bring us next.

The Russian Cage (Gunnie Rose #3) by Charlaine Harris

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is a great finish to this book series……or is it?? I just discovered that the author is writing a fourth Gunnie Rose book (release date 2022) – no idea what the plot will be because the main storyline of this series wrapped up in this book, but there are definitely enough loose ends to continue the series another several books, which I would love.

The Bone Maker by Sarah Beth Durst

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Durst has done it again -written a fantastic, can’t-put-down, stand alone fantasy book. I love her writing, I love her characters and I love her original story-telling. I get excited every time she releases a new book – and this one does not disappoint.

The story is set in the kingdom of Vos. The kingdom has bone makers who can animate bones to create objects that can do a variety of things, like clean, send messages, etc. They also create charms that give people a limited amount of “super-powers”, like strength, speed, stealth, etc. These creations are made from animal bones – the use of human bones is illegal.

Knight’s Ransom (The First Argentines #1) by Jeff Wheeler

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is a really good first book in a new, exciting fantasy series. We’re back in Kingfountain, and I’m so excited! This story revolves around a young man nicknamed Ransom. As a young second son, he is given to the King by his father as hostage to ensure his father behaves and does not side with rival Devon Argentine, who is intent on taking the crown for himself.

Shadow in the Empire of Light by Jane Routley

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Meh. This an ok fantasy. It’s an easy read, but the story doesn’t really go anywhere. It’s listed as a YA Fantasy and while the story is as simplistic as a YA book, I think the inclusion of a lot of discussion about sex takes it out of that category. Perhaps if you’re talking about college-age YA, then perhaps.

Infernal (The Chronicles of Stratus #1) by Mark De Jager

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I have mixed feelings about this book. At times I liked it, and at others I was annoyed at it. It’s a dark fantasy told in the first person about a man that wakes up with no memory and unable to move. From there, he takes us a on a violent road trip to an unknown destination to find answers to burning questions like, “what (not who) am I”, “why am I so angry” and “why do I have a thirst for revenge”?
