Death’s Daughter (Children of the Old Ones, #1) by S. A. Barnes

Rating: 3 out of 5.

This was a fun, fluffy urban paranormal fantasy that features the daughter of Death, Jocasta, just trying to be normal at college. She’s got great friends and a complicated relationship with a TA, Carter. Instead of killing people she feeds on their disappointments, failures, and rejections. All is going well until a sexy guy named Devon, a descendant of Lust—shows up on campus because Death just named Jo as his successor, making her a powerful ally and a massive target. When a friend of Jo’s is murdered, Jo becomes the number 1 suspect. As the body count rises, and Jo does everything she can to protect those she loves, she tests the limits of her power and doesn’t know who to trust.

In Every Generation by Kendare Blake

Rating: 4 out of 5.

“Into every generation, there is a Chosen One. One girl in all the world. She alone will wield the strength and skill to stand against the vampires, the demons, and the forces of darkness; to stop the spread of their evil and the swell of their numbers. She is the Slayer.”

Let me preface this review by saying that I am a huge Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan. HUGE. As in I own the entire series on DVD (yeah, remember those old things?) and routinely play them in the background while I’m cleaning, getting ready for the day or to go out, or when I want comfortable coziness. I love all things Buffyverse. Sooooo, when I hear of anything related to Buffy, I leap. That is what I did when I got a chance to read this book. And because I’m such a fan, I will both giddily gush with excitement, and be dramatically picky, about all new things “Buffy” in this review.

Paper & Blood (Ink & Sigil #2) by Kevin Hearne

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Another great book in Hearne’s new spinoff of the Iron Druid Chronicles series. This book has Al, Buck, Nadia, an Australian apprentice sigil agent and the Iron Druid tracking down the apprentice’s missing mentor and another sigil agent in the Australian Outback. Once they track the general location where the sigil agents went missing, they quickly run into some very strange monsters that are determined to eat and kill their way through everyone they face.

The Russian Cage (Gunnie Rose #3) by Charlaine Harris

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is a great finish to this book series……or is it?? I just discovered that the author is writing a fourth Gunnie Rose book (release date 2022) – no idea what the plot will be because the main storyline of this series wrapped up in this book, but there are definitely enough loose ends to continue the series another several books, which I would love.

Lore by Alexandra Bracken

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is a really good YA Fantasy that is a mash-up of urban fantasy and Greek mythology. While most YA Fantasy books all seem to have the same basic premise (strong young female must overcome great odds/conquer evil/rule the nation while resisting falling in love with the boy that is either her childhood friend/enemy/new mysterious over protective friend), this is a refreshingly original take on that premise.
