Tarnished City (Dark Gifts #2) by Vic James

Tarnished City

4 stars

This is the second book in the Dark Gifts trilogy. The story picks up right after the end of the first book. Lord Jardin is the interim Chancellor and begins massive crack downs on the slaves and rebels. He also begins talking about implementing new laws against skill-less and Gavar begins to worry about his daughter’s future. Luke has been convicted of murder and condemned. He is turned over to Lord Crovan and taken to his private estate for experimentation and torture. Continue reading “Tarnished City (Dark Gifts #2) by Vic James”

The forsaken throne

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This was a great ending to a fun series. The action picks up shortly after the events in The Silent Shield. The Forbidden Court has been torched and Gahalatine blames Trynne. He accuses her of treachery and issues an ultimatum. Meanwhile, Kingfountain is threatened once again by Morwenna. She will stop at nothing to quench her thirst for revenge and the throne. It’s up to Trynne and Fallon to save the people of their kingdoms, as well as their families. Continue reading “The Forsaken Throne (Kingfountain #6) by Jeff Wheeler”

The Queen of Sorrow (The Queens of Renthia #3) by Sarah Beth Durst

queen of sorrow

This is a satisfying ending to a fun trilogy.

After Queen Daleina and Queen Naelin thwarted Queen Merecot of Semo’s invasion, the Queens of Aratay hope that their people can finally have peace. As Queen Naelin is on a tour of the country to meet her people and help heal areas damaged by the last battle, her children are kidnapped. Blaming Queen Merecot, Naelin loses control and is ready to go to war. But Merecot has other plans than just taking over Aratay. She thinks she can banish all spirits out of Renthia forever. Could this dangerous plan actually work?

This was a very fun, interesting trilogy. I’m sad to see it end, but look forward to reading new books by this author.

This was a quick, fun read. It’s a young adult, historical fiction fantasy book. England is suffering from a plague that turns infected people’s body to stone. If the infection spreads enough in the person’s body, it is deadly. Thomas Fawkes is the son of legendary Guy Fawkes. He has been infected with the stone plague in his eye, which he needs to hide from the public. Continue reading “Fawkes by Nadine Brandes”

These Broken Stars (Starbound #1) by Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner

These broken stars

4 stars

I really enjoyed this book. I’ve read other books from these authors and really enjoyed them, and this book didn’t disappoint. I read it in two days!

Our two main characters are traveling through hyperspace on a luxury spaceliner named Icarus. Lilac is the 16 year old daughter of the richest man in the universe. Her father is overprotective and doesn’t let Lilac go anywhere alone. She has bodyguards with her 24/7 and he actively discourages any boy from showing interest in his daughter. Lilac, never knowing if someone wants to be near her for her money, influence or access to her father, has built up a protective wall around her to keep everyone at a distance. She works hard to project an aura that she is superficial and flighty. Continue reading “These Broken Stars (Starbound #1) by Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner”

I really enjoyed the author’s Kingfountain book series, so am really pleased that he’s started another series to savor. The author does a good job of worldbuilding and once again creates interesting characters that the reader can get invested in. Continue reading “Storm Glass (Harbinger #1) by Jeff Wheeler”

Citadel: The Concordant Sequence by Matthew S. Cox

Citadel

3.5 stars

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The first 20-25% of this book was very slow and I almost gave up on it. Fortunately, I stuck with it and was not disappointed. The author provides sufficient world-building, although most of the characters other than Kiera are pretty flimsy. Once the action picked up, the story kept my attention. I was also relieved to discover that this is a stand-alone book with a beginning, middle and end. This is a satisfying find in a genre overloaded with trilogies and multiple-book series. Obsidio (The Illuminae Files, #3) by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Obsidio

4.5 stars

Wow. What a great finish to a really fun series. I loved the first books, Illuminae (The Illuminae Files #1) by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff and Gemina (The Illuminae Files #2) by Aime Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. I was very excited to see how the series concluded, but also sad because I didn’t want it to end. Hopefully these authors will conjure up another exciting series for us to read in the future.

Kady, Ezra, Hanna, and Nik successfully defeated the soldiers sent to jump station Heimdall and were able to escape alive. Instead of being able to relax after a grueling battle, they find themselves with 2,000 refugees on the container ship, Mao. The ship is built for a lot less people and resources are scarce. They decide to go back to Kerenza but don’t know what awaits them there, if anything. Adding to their plight, the adults on Mao dismiss the contributions and abilities of our ragtag team, leaving them angry and frustrated. Song of Blood & Stone (Earthsinger Chronicles #1) by L. Penelope

song of blood and stone

3.5 stars

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This was a good first book in this new series. There is minimal worldbuilding, but that’s pretty typical for a YA Fantasy book. The main characters are likeable and earnest. There is plenty of action and the storyline moves along at a decent pace. I recommend reading this book. Continue reading “Song of Blood & Stone (Earthsinger Chronicles #1) by L. Penelope”
