This is a cute contemporary book about a couple’s breakup from the woman’s & her dog’s points of view. Let me just say, as a life-long dog owner, the premise of this book tickled me to no end. I’ve always wondered what my dogs are thinking, & have even pretended I understand what they were thinking when they looked at me or did something goofy – or annoying. Like, am I being punished because I had to stay at work late and her dinner was late? Probably.
John and Lucy have been together for 10 years and are getting married in 5 months. Except, at the beginning of the book, John has moved out and says he “needs to be alone”. Lucy is crushed. John won’t tell her what happened to prompt this feeling. But Skip, their wolf-like Timber Wolf/Labrador rescue dog, knows the truth – John’s secret. And his part in it. Guilt-riddled, fiercely protective of Lucy, Skip knows he needs to stay by her side to help her get through John’s betrayal. Even if she doesn’t initially know about it.
The book alternates between Skip and Lucy’s perspective, and it’s difficult to watch Lucy’s grief, pain and loss. It definitely reminds me of those difficult times when l’ve been in her shoes, and thank goodness I had my own “Skip” to see me through it. Dogs add so much to our lives and I can’t imagine my life without my dogs.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Kate Rock Book Tours and the author. All opinions are my own.
