Tess was fired from her tv job but just landed her dream role of starring in an adaption of Northanger Abbey. She and her mother love Jane Austen and since her mother’s passing, she relies on Austen to feel close to her mother. The problem is that her co-star Hugh. He’s a handsome, arrogant British series actor that wants nothing to do with Tess or her messy life. An accident on set transports them to Regency England 200 years ago and they have no choice but to rely on each other to try to get back to modern times.
Tess was a hot mess, but she was an endearing hot mess. Hugh was a lot tougher to like in the beginning, but once I learned more about him and what he was dealing with, I warmed up to him. I loved the banter between the couple and I kept wondering when they were finally going to cave in to the tension. The book swung back and forth between serious issues including mental health issues and grief, but the author did a great job of inserting them into the story without disrupting the flow of the book.
I love books set during the Regency era and the author added fun touches of it through Hugh’s family. Tess and Hugh did a great job of improvising their way through awkward situations and they really had to think on their feet. Overall this was a cute book that you’ll have fun reading.
I listened to the audiobook and the narrators did a great job. They had distinctive voices for each character and I could picture the way each looked in my mind while I listened. If you’re able, I recommend listening to the book.
I was provided a complimentary copy of the audiobook from Macmillan Audio and NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
