This is a sweet second chance romance featuring two MCs that grew up together. Laney had a huge crush on Fletcher, who was her brother’s best friend and football teammate. Their attraction was undeniable, but Fletcher stayed true to the “no sisters” rule his buddies agreed to in high school. After turning 18, Laney confessed her feelings for Fletcher, but after a misunderstanding, the couple didn’t talk for the next 12 years. Fletcher becomes a pro football player and Laney stays in their small town. A mutual friend is getting married and Fletcher is the best man and Laney is the maid of honor. This means they are thrust together and forced to work together to fulfill their duties.
The story is told in dual timelines – when they were in high school and the present. I loved seeing how their friendship bloomed when they were growing up. They were both suffering and were able to give each other comfort and build trust. I hate the miscommunication trope, but in this instance, I think it was fairly realistic and worked with the story.
In the present the couple come to a truce to work together for the wedding. I loved how protective and thoughtful Fletcher was to Laney, even when she didn’t want him to be. He slowly broke through her protective wall and they worked through their problems. I loved how the men in the story were forthcoming about their feelings and admitted to going to therapy and encouraged others to go too. I don’t think it was necessarily realistic, but I loved it in the story.
The small town aspect of this book and the side characters were awesome. The friendship group was hilarious and their interactions cracked me up. I’d love to have a beer with them and hang out. I hope some of them get their own books because I am so there for it!
I listened to the audio of this book and the narrators did a fantastic job. They brought the characters to life and made the story flow effortlessly.
I received a complimentary audio copy of this book from The Author Agency. All opinions are my own.
