Witchmark (Witchmark #1) by C.L. Polk

Witchmark RD3 fixedbleeds new dress

This was a fun, quick read. The story is set in a world similar to England after WWII. A group of wealthy families control the weather with their unique magical abilities. Miles Singer had an unhappy childhood and was fated to be enslaved by the interests of his family or committed to a witches asylum. All he ever wanted to do was become a doctor and heal people. Miles fakes his own death, runs away and joins the military, who put him through medical school. Right after he finishes his training, war breaks out between Aeland and Laneer and Miles is sent to the front. Continue reading “Witchmark (Witchmark #1) by C.L. Polk”

The Fallen by Ravek Hunter

the Fallen

This was an ok book. The major plot points were pretty predictable, but it was still a fun read. Drystan, Temple Knight of Lyonesse, is sent to retrieve the betrothed of his uncle, the Duke of Tintagel. When Eselt and Drystan meet, there are immediate sparks between the two. As they start the journey back to Tintagel, the couple can’t resist getting together and start a doomed love affair. When they reach the Duke’s house, cruel soldier Purin discovers their affair and is determined to tell the Duke. Meanwhile, two mysterious brothers hunt down a rogue healer that is possessed by a chaos demon. Continue reading “The Fallen by Ravek Hunter”

The Queen of Sorrow (The Queens of Renthia #3) by Sarah Beth Durst

queen of sorrow

4 stars

This is a satisfying ending to a fun trilogy.

After Queen Daleina and Queen Naelin thwarted Queen Merecot of Semo’s invasion, the Queens of Aratay hope that their people can finally have peace. As Queen Naelin is on a tour of the country to meet her people and help heal areas damaged by the last battle, her children are kidnapped. Blaming Queen Merecot, Naelin loses control and is ready to go to war. But Merecot has other plans than just taking over Aratay. She thinks she can banish all spirits out of Renthia forever. Could this dangerous plan actually work?

This was a very fun, interesting trilogy. I’m sad to see it end, but look forward to reading new books by this author.

This was a quick, fun read. It’s a young adult, historical fiction fantasy book. England is suffering from a plague that turns infected people’s body to stone. If the infection spreads enough in the person’s body, it is deadly. Thomas Fawkes is the son of legendary Guy Fawkes. He has been infected with the stone plague in his eye, which he needs to hide from the public. Continue reading “Fawkes by Nadine Brandes”

This is the first book in a new, big epic fantasy series. This book is told from the perspective of one main character toward the end of his life, after all of the big events in his life had occurred. The story centers on Hadrian Marlowe, an elite man from the ruling class. He is the presumptive heir to his father’s lands, however his life path doesn’t quite take the route he anticipates. He flees his father’s land and winds up stranded on a strange, harsh, unsophisticated world. Continue reading “Empire of Silence (Sun Eater #1) by Christopher Ruocchio”

These Broken Stars (Starbound #1) by Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner

These broken stars

I really enjoyed this book. I’ve read other books from these authors and really enjoyed them, and this book didn’t disappoint. I read it in two days!

Our two main characters are traveling through hyperspace on a luxury spaceliner named Icarus. Lilac is the 16 year old daughter of the richest man in the universe. Her father is overprotective and doesn’t let Lilac go anywhere alone. She has bodyguards with her 24/7 and he actively discourages any boy from showing interest in his daughter. Lilac, never knowing if someone wants to be near her for her money, influence or access to her father, has built up a protective wall around her to keep everyone at a distance. She works hard to project an aura that she is superficial and flighty. Continue reading “These Broken Stars (Starbound #1) by Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner”

I started reading this book before I realized it is book 9 in the Alex Verus book series by the author. I haven’t read any other books in this series, but was still able to follow the storyline and enjoy the book. This was a very good urban fantasy book. It kept my attention and makes me want to go back and read the first books in the series. Continue reading “Marked (Alex Verus #9) by Benedict Jacka”

Citadel: The Concordant Sequence by Matthew S. Cox

Citadel

3.5 stars

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The first 20-25% of this book was very slow and I almost gave up on it. Fortunately, I stuck with it and was not disappointed. The author provides sufficient world-building, although most of the characters other than Kiera are pretty flimsy. Once the action picked up, the story kept my attention. I was also relieved to discover that this is a stand-alone book with a beginning, middle and end. This is a satisfying find in a genre overloaded with trilogies and multiple-book series.
