Consolation (Paul Hirschhausen #3) by Garry Disher

Rating: 3 out of 5.

This is an ok mystery set in Australia. The story moves slowly and there are irrelevant storylines that detract from the main mystery. This is the third book in the series, but it’s a stand alone mystery so you can read this book without having read the other two.

Little Cruelties by Liz Nugent

Rating: 2 out of 5.

Ugh. This book was really hard to read and I was so glad when I finished. It’s a depressing mystery/thriller about a dysfunctional family of selfish, narcissistic people. None of the characters had any redeeming qualities.

All the Devils are Here (Chief Inspector Armand Gamache #16) by Louis Penny

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is another fantastic mystery/thriller in this wonderful series. The story is set in Paris, where Armand and his wife are visiting as they await the birth of another grandchild. Walking through the city after dinner, Armand’s godfather, the billionaire Stephen Horowitz, is intentionally run down in the street and critical injured. And so, the mystery begins.

The Bone Shard Daughter (The Drowning Empire #1) by Andrea Stewart

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is a very good first book in an exciting new fantasy series. It has interesting characters, multiple storylines and focuses more on magic than sword fighting. I’m not a huge fan of books focused on magic, but this isn’t the wizard-wielding type of magic. It’s much more subtle and sinister.

This is an ok mystery thriller about the relationship of two sisters and what happens when mistrust is sowed by outside forces.

The Prince’s Bride (The Prince’s Bride #1) by J. J. McAvoy

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is a cute, sweet modern romance involving a foreign Prince that needs money to save the royal family and an American heiress that needs to get married to get her inheritance.

The Wonder Boy of Whistle Stop (Whistle Stop, AL #2) by Fannie Flagg

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is a wonderful, warm book revisiting beloved characters from Whistle Stop, Alabama. The book skips back and forth between time periods and characters, telling some of the side stories in between the lines of Fried Green Tomatoes.

Dyrwolf by Kat Kinney

This is a very good, exciting YA Paranormal Fantasy book. It’s fast-paced, with interesting characters and a good storyline.

Plain Bad Heroines by Emily M. Danforth

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Huh. I’m not quite sure what I just read. It was a mash-up of several genres, including gothic, horror, mystery, LGBTQ romance and historical fiction. This is a unique book that won’t be for everyone.
