Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield

Once upon a river

4 stars

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is a hard book to describe. It’s part folktale, part mystery, part romance and part magical fairy tale. The story starts off slowly, but stick with it. As it unwinds, the pace picks up until its tragic, but wonderful, ending.

During a dark midwinter’s night in a small inn by the Thames river, the regulars are entertaining themselves by telling stories. A badly injured stranger bursts through the door carrying a little dead girl. After the healer tends to the injured stranger, she inspects the body of the little girl and discovers she’s alive. The regulars speculate as to how the little girl could be alive. Is it a miracle, magic, science or something else? Continue reading “Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield”

Stalking Ground (Timber Creek K-9 Mystery #2) by Margaret Mizushima

4 stars

Another good book in this mystery series.

Deputy Sheriff Brody’s girlfriend Adrienne goes missing and Mattie and her K-9 partner Robo are called in to conduct a search. As the search intensifies, Mattie and Robo eventually find the girl’s dead body in the mountains just as a snow storm hits the area. Mattie and Robo must guard the body while Brody hikes back down the mountain for help. Veterinarian Cole Walker hikes up to take supplies to Mattie and help keep her safe while they wait for the rest of team. Searching for Terry Punchout by Tyler Hellard

Searching for Terry Punchout

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

First of all, any book with hockey as a main theme is already going to get high marks from me. 🙂 I am a HUGE hockey fan (Go Blues!) and there just aren’t enough good books that feature hockey. This is a good, funny and touching book that I really enjoyed reading. I’ve never read anything by this author, but will definitely read more of his books. Vox by Christina Dalcher

Vox

3.5 stars

I learned that once a plan is in place, everything can happen overnight.

The premise of this book is very disturbing. Your rational mind says “this could never happen in the U.S.”. But given the current political climate, there is a tiny voice in the back of your mind that whispers “…right? I mean, it really couldn’t happen, could it?” THAT is the most disturbing thing about this book. That tiny voice that skitters around in your mind while you lay in bed at night trying to fall asleep. Silent in the Sanctuary (Lady Julia Grey #2) by Deanna Raybourn

Silent in the Sanctuary

4 stars

This is another good book in the Lady Julia Grey mystery series. When the book opens, Julia has been in Italy for the last 6 months with two of her brothers. She and her brothers are summoned back to their home in England by their father. When they arrive, they find the home filled with family and guests. Among the guests is Nicholas Brisbane – the one person she was trying to forget. Not only has he been elevated to a Lord, but he’s engaged to be wed. Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore (Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore #1) by Robin Sloan

Mr Penumbra

3 stars

This was our Oct. book club pick. Clay lost his job as a web designer when his employer went out of business. Desperate for work, he takes the late shift in a 24 hour book stored called Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. The store only seems to have a few customers who don’t buy books. Rather, they trade one huge mysterious book for another. One of Clay’s duties is to write down every detail about the transaction with the customers, including what they check out, what they are wearing, and what their behavior and mannerisms are. Tarnished City (Dark Gifts #2) by Vic James

Tarnished City

4 stars

This is the second book in the Dark Gifts trilogy. The story picks up right after the end of the first book. Lord Jardin is the interim Chancellor and begins massive crack downs on the slaves and rebels. He also begins talking about implementing new laws against skill-less and Gavar begins to worry about his daughter’s future. Luke has been convicted of murder and condemned. He is turned over to Lord Crovan and taken to his private estate for experimentation and torture. Continue reading “Tarnished City (Dark Gifts #2) by Vic James”

Lethal White (Cormoran Strike #4) by Robert Galbraith

Lethal White

3.5 stars

I really enjoy this book series, but this was my least favorite book so far. The story starts out with a young man named Billy visiting Strike at his office. The man clearly has mental health issues, with paranoid delusions. He insists that when he was a young child he witnessed another child being killed near his home. His story is disjointed and incomplete. Before Strike can find out more, Billy dashes out of Strike’s office. Continue reading “Lethal White (Cormoran Strike #4) by Robert Galbraith”

The Witch of Willow Hall by Hester Fox

The witch of willow hall

3.5 stars

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first gothic historical fiction book I’ve read. The writing was well done and the story was interesting, but I have mixed feelings about this book. It seemed to float between several genres and the story became a bit muddled in the process. Continue reading “The Witch of Willow Hall by Hester Fox”
