Silent in the Grave (Lady Julia Grey #1) by Deanna Raybourn

silent in the grave

4 stars

This is the first book in a historical mystery series set in the late 1880s in London. In the first book we meet Lady Julia Grey. She is a lady in her late 20’s unhappily married to her childhood friend, Sir Edward Grey. She comes from an aristocratic family, one of nine siblings. While at a dinner party in their home, Edward collapses and dies. Continue reading “Silent in the Grave (Lady Julia Grey #1) by Deanna Raybourn”

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I started reading this book before I realized it is book 9 in the Alex Verus book series by the author. I haven’t read any other books in this series, but was still able to follow the storyline and enjoy the book. This was a very good urban fantasy book. It kept my attention and makes me want to go back and read the first books in the series. Continue reading “Marked (Alex Verus #9) by Benedict Jacka”

Silver Stars (Front Lines, #2) by Michael Grant

4.5 Stars

I love this book series!! The second book is just as good as the first. The story picks up shortly after the events of Front Lines. It’s the summer of 1943. The American forces have now set their sights on Sicily and Italy. Frangie, Rainy, and Rio are no longer green soldiers. Each one knows the horror of combat and the lengths they will go to save themselves and their fellow soldiers. While North Africa was bad, the upcoming battles will be so much worse. Women soldiers are becoming a symbol for equality, with the three women leading the way.

The story is so compelling and I couldn’t put it down. I found myself reading late into the night. If you haven’t started reading this series, do so now!!

The Sisters were two asteroids that struck the earth and almost annihilated the entire world. For almost a century storms ravaged the earth, making survival barely possible. In England pockets of survivors eek out a living in small communities. Most modern technology has not survived and the remnants of resources that remained after the asteroid strike are nearly gone. As civilization tries to rebuild, different tyrants emerge and cause chaos. In a small area of the country two strong families are at war and hundreds of people die in the ensuing battles. Citadel: The Concordant Sequence by Matthew S. Cox

Citadel

3.5 stars

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The first 20-25% of this book was very slow and I almost gave up on it. Fortunately, I stuck with it and was not disappointed. The author provides sufficient world-building, although most of the characters other than Kiera are pretty flimsy. Once the action picked up, the story kept my attention. I was also relieved to discover that this is a stand-alone book with a beginning, middle and end. This is a satisfying find in a genre overloaded with trilogies and multiple-book series. The Rooster Bar by John Grisham

the rooster bar

2.5 stars

Meh. I usually like Grisham’s novels, but this one was not one of his best. I think perhaps the well is finally running dry. The book started ok, but quickly fizzled out. None of the characters were likeable, the plot and dialog was absurd and the story was not compelling. I really couldn’t believe this was a John Grisham book. The Lost for Words Bookshop: A Novel by Stephanie Butland

The lost for words

4 stars (release date June 19, 2018)

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book. The writing is very engaging, the characters interesting and the story compelling. Loveday is a young woman with a painful past that works in a book shop and keeps to herself. She prefers books to people and tattoos the first line of her favorite books all over her body. When a magician/poet worms his way into her life and heart at the same time she receives three mysterious deliveries at the book shop, will Loveday finally confront her past and learn to move on?

This book is a quick read and hard to put down. I highly recommend you read it.
