Front Lines (Front Lines #1) by Michael Grant

front lines

4.5 stars

I really liked this book and had a hard time putting it down. While some people have said that the story is slow, I didn’t find it that way. I think it is well-paced, with plenty of action. The story kept my interest and I can’t wait to read the rest of the books in the series. Continue reading “Front Lines (Front Lines #1) by Michael Grant”

The Child Finder by Rene Denfeld

the child finder

4.5 Stars

I loved this book. It’s both heartbreaking and hopeful. It draws you in and you won’t want to put the book down.

Naomi was once a “lost girl” and managed to escape her captors. Haunted by her past and frustrated with her inability to remember what happened to her, she earns a living as a private investigator tracking down lost and missing children. Her relentless determination in pursuing the children earns her the nickname “The Child Finder”. Continue reading “The Child Finder by Rene Denfeld”

A year later his mother is abusing drugs and alcohol and in an abusive relationship with the town big shot. He’s lost most of his friends and is an outcast. Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders

Lincoln in the Bardo

2 stars

This book had an interesting premise, but ultimately I didn’t find it enjoyable. It’s set in a graveyard the night that Lincoln’s young son Willie is buried. The story takes place in one night and is a series of conversations between ghosts that are trying to encourage Willie to “move on” from the graveyard. Continue reading “Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders”

The Library at the Edge of the World by Felicity Hayes-McCoy

Library at edge of world

3 stars

This is a nice, quiet book that is an easy read. Hannah fled her small hometown for London after school. She married a successful and wealthy lawyer, had a daughter, and lived a sophisticated life. Years later when she discovers he’s being unfaithful, she packs her daughter up and moves back to her small hometown in Ireland. Continue reading “The Library at the Edge of the World by Felicity Hayes-McCoy”

Unraveling Oliver by Liz Nugent

Unraveling oliver

3.5 stars

This was a pretty good debut book by this author. Not outstanding, but a solid book. The story begins with a terrible act of violence. Oliver, a handsome, successful children’s book author hits his wife Alice and watches as she cowers on the floor. He dispassionately watches her reaction to his assault, and then leaves the house to get drunk. Hours later he returns to the house and is confronted by Alice with secrets from his past. Oliver proceeds to mercilessly beat Alice into a coma. Continue reading “Unraveling Oliver by Liz Nugent”

Nightblade’s Vengeance (Blades of the Fallen #1) by Ryan Kirk

Nightblades Vengeance

4 stars

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest opinion.

This is a really good start to a new fantasy series. This is the first book that I’ve read by this author, but certainly won’t be the last. The story is set in a “Kingdom” that reminds me of feudal China or Japan. The King is sick and dying with no heir. Members from the three ruling families sit on the King’s Council. Each family tries to maneuver to take over the throne upon the King’s death. Continue reading “Nightblade’s Vengeance (Blades of the Fallen #1) by Ryan Kirk”

The Guilty (Will Robie #4) by David Baldacci

The guilty

4 stars

This is another great Will Robie book. When a mission goes awry, Will is forced to take a step back and try to get his head straight. He needs to figure out if he can continue working for the government. One way to do this is to make peace with his past, which he is reluctant to do. Will is estranged from his father and hasn’t returned to his home town since he left just after high school. When he learns that his father has been arrested for murder, Will returns to his small southern town to confront his past and help his father. Millard Salter’s Last Day by Jacob M. Appel

Millard Salter's Last Day

It’s Millard Salter’s 75 birthday. He starts the day meeting with a woman he has recently fallen in love with and helps with her final plans to kill herself that day. He plans to join her in the afterlife at the end of the day. He then goes to his work as the head of the psychiatric department of a local hospital. Millard has his final day planned out between visits with his children, final plans for his colleagues and a visit to his last wife’s cemetery plot. Along the way, Millard thinks about people and activities in his past and steels himself to go through with his plans. Continue reading “Millard Salter’s Last Day by Jacob M. Appel”
