Plain Bad Heroines by Emily M. Danforth

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Huh. I’m not quite sure what I just read. It was a mash-up of several genres, including gothic, horror, mystery, LGBTQ romance and historical fiction. This is a unique book that won’t be for everyone.

Anxious People by Fredrik Backman

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is another wonderful book by one of my favorite authors. Backman carefully crafts a story that at first seems random, but slowly the people and events weave together into one beautiful tapestry.

A Question of Betrayal (Elena Standish #2) by Anne Perry

This is a good mystery/thriller set in the years just before WWII. In this book Elena is sent to Northern Italy on her first MI6 mission to rescue a contact that has important information regarding future plans of Nazi Germany. A Deception at Thornecrest (Amory Ames #7) by Ashley Weaver

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is a good cozy historical fiction mystery. This is book 7 in the series, but this is the first one that I’ve read. Despite that, I didn’t feel that I missed out too much by not having read the other books. The author did a good job of weaving in important facts about events that happened in previous books to give this one context. So, you can pick this one up and enjoy it without having read the other books in the series.

Yet another great mystery starring our favorite K-9 officer Mattie Cobb and her partner Robo. This time Timber Creek is having a lot of rain and areas are starting to flood. While out checking on damaged trails in the mountains, Mattie and Robo stumble on a dead body caught up on a tree in the flood waters. The deceased is linked to a new religious sect that has moved into the area. The members dress in 19th Century attire and practice polygamy.

Two Widows by Laura Wolfe

Two widows

This was an easy-to-read mystery/thriller set in northern Michigan. Continue reading “Two Widows by Laura Wolfe”

The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware

the turn of the key

3 stars

This was a fairly good Mystery/Thriller book about a nanny left to care for 4 children in a remote Scottish Highlands “smart” house that is reportedly “haunted”. The author did an ok job of building tension, but overall, the story was a little blah. Continue reading “The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware”
