Vox by Christina Dalcher

Vox

3.5 stars

I learned that once a plan is in place, everything can happen overnight.

The premise of this book is very disturbing. Your rational mind says “this could never happen in the U.S.”. But given the current political climate, there is a tiny voice in the back of your mind that whispers “…right? I mean, it really couldn’t happen, could it?” THAT is the most disturbing thing about this book. That tiny voice that skitters around in your mind while you lay in bed at night trying to fall asleep. Tarnished City (Dark Gifts #2) by Vic James

Tarnished City

4 stars

This is the second book in the Dark Gifts trilogy. The story picks up right after the end of the first book. Lord Jardin is the interim Chancellor and begins massive crack downs on the slaves and rebels. He also begins talking about implementing new laws against skill-less and Gavar begins to worry about his daughter’s future. Luke has been convicted of murder and condemned. He is turned over to Lord Crovan and taken to his private estate for experimentation and torture. Continue reading “Tarnished City (Dark Gifts #2) by Vic James”

Empire of Silence (Sun Eater #1) by Christopher Ruocchio

empire of silence

3.5 stars

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first book in a new, big epic fantasy series. This book is told from the perspective of one main character toward the end of his life, after all of the big events in his life had occurred. The story centers on Hadrian Marlowe, an elite man from the ruling class. He is the presumptive heir to his father’s lands, however his life path doesn’t quite take the route he anticipates. He flees his father’s land and winds up stranded on a strange, harsh, unsophisticated world. Continue reading “Empire of Silence (Sun Eater #1) by Christopher Ruocchio”

These Broken Stars (Starbound #1) by Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner

These broken stars

4 stars

I really enjoyed this book. I’ve read other books from these authors and really enjoyed them, and this book didn’t disappoint. I read it in two days!

Our two main characters are traveling through hyperspace on a luxury spaceliner named Icarus. Lilac is the 16 year old daughter of the richest man in the universe. Her father is overprotective and doesn’t let Lilac go anywhere alone. She has bodyguards with her 24/7 and he actively discourages any boy from showing interest in his daughter. Lilac, never knowing if someone wants to be near her for her money, influence or access to her father, has built up a protective wall around her to keep everyone at a distance. She works hard to project an aura that she is superficial and flighty. Continue reading “These Broken Stars (Starbound #1) by Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner”

Shelter: Tales of the Aftermath by Dave Hutchinson

Shelter

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The Sisters were two asteroids that struck the earth and almost annihilated the entire world. For almost a century storms ravaged the earth, making survival barely possible. In England pockets of survivors eek out a living in small communities. Most modern technology has not survived and the remnants of resources that remained after the asteroid strike are nearly gone. As civilization tries to rebuild, different tyrants emerge and cause chaos. In a small area of the country two strong families are at war and hundreds of people die in the ensuing battles. Nightblade's honor

4 stars

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is a great sequel to the first book in the series Nightblade’s Vengeance. The book starts off with a bang and doesn’t slow down. With the kingdom in chaos and on the brink of civil war, the nightblades must choose a side. After the events of the last book, the nightblades are out of favor with the citizens in the Kingdom. Nightblades are considered the enemies of the kingdom, are hunted by the lords and must go into hiding. Continue reading “Nightblade’s Honor (Blades of the Fallen #2) by Ryan Kirk”

Unearthed (Unearthed #1) by Aime Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

unearthed

4 stars

This is a good first book in a new sci-fi series by two great authors. The earth is dying. When a message is received from a long-extinct alien race it seems the very thing that could save the planet. Their technology helps un-do some of the earth’s environmental damage, as well as provides energy to power entire cities. Continue reading “Unearthed (Unearthed #1) by Aime Kaufman and Meagan Spooner”
