Girl One by Sara Flannery Murphy

Rating: 3 out of 5.

This was a good SciFi Mystery/Thriller about one of nine girls born without male DNA. The first girl, Josephine, has eschewed all contact and publicity regarding her life at the experimental commune called the “Homestead”. When her mother goes missing under mysterious circumstances, Josie finds herself tracking down her “sisters” in an effort to find her mother. As Josie follows the clues left by her mother, she and her sisters uncover dark secrets about their origin and abilities they possess.

The Promised Queen (Forgotten Empires #3) by Jeffe Kennedy

Rating: 3 out of 5.

This is a satisfying ending to a good YA Fantasy trilogy. Conrí, former Crown Prince of Oriel, married Queen Euthalia of Calanthe to fulfill the prophecy that would end Emperor Anure’s cruel hold over the empire. But they failed. Con gave it all he had and Lia gave her life – temporarily- but nothing worked.

The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This was our April book club book. I really enjoyed this creepy mystery/thriller/horror book. The book, set in 1982, is weird and creepy and will suck you in and you won’t want to put it down. Viv Delaney leaves her home town and ends up in Fells, NY. She gets a night clerk job at the same rundown motel her aunt worked at just before she disappeared 35 years ago.

Warrior’s Ransom (The First Argentine’s #2) by Jeff Wheeler

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is another great book in this YA Fantasy series. If you haven’t read the first book yet, you have time to pick it up and read, and then read this one before the third book comes out in September 2021.

The Shadow of the Gods (The Bloodsworn Saga, #1) by John Gwynne

Rating: 4 out of 5.

4.5 stars

Wow. What a fantastic first book in a new, exciting epic fantasy series. It’s got everything you want in an epic fantasy; Norse mythology, gods, monsters, dragons, swords, battles, mercenaries, stupid and/or evil rulers, skilled fighters, cowards, plucky former slaves out for vengeance, quests, and much more. The book ends on a great cliffhanger and I can’t wait to see what the author will bring us next.

A Question of Navigation by Kevin Hearne

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This was a funny, creepy science fiction short story by one of my favorite authors. I don’t even like short stories, but I loved this one.

The Russian Cage (Gunnie Rose #3) by Charlaine Harris

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is a great finish to this book series……or is it?? I just discovered that the author is writing a fourth Gunnie Rose book (release date 2022) – no idea what the plot will be because the main storyline of this series wrapped up in this book, but there are definitely enough loose ends to continue the series another several books, which I would love.

The Bone Maker by Sarah Beth Durst

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Durst has done it again -written a fantastic, can’t-put-down, stand alone fantasy book. I love her writing, I love her characters and I love her original story-telling. I get excited every time she releases a new book – and this one does not disappoint.

The story is set in the kingdom of Vos. The kingdom has bone makers who can animate bones to create objects that can do a variety of things, like clean, send messages, etc. They also create charms that give people a limited amount of “super-powers”, like strength, speed, stealth, etc. These creations are made from animal bones – the use of human bones is illegal.

Empire of Jackals (Chrysathamere Trilogy #2) by Morgan Cole

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is a good second book in the trilogy, and focuses mainly on Marilia’s twin brother Annuweth. He is still bitter about the injuries he sustained, and about Marilia’s successes in the war. As Marilia tries to step back from warfare and power, Annueweth plots to grab it an any cost.
