Mr Penumbra

3 stars

This was our Oct. book club pick. Clay lost his job as a web designer when his employer went out of business. Desperate for work, he takes the late shift in a 24 hour book stored called Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. The store only seems to have a few customers who don’t buy books. Rather, they trade one huge mysterious book for another. One of Clay’s duties is to write down every detail about the transaction with the customers, including what they check out, what they are wearing, and what their behavior and mannerisms are. Starless by Jacqueline Carey

Starless

Another great book by this author. Unlike most of her books, this is a stand alone book which was a nice change of pace. This isn’t my favorite book of hers, but since I like her writing so much I was still thrilled to read it.

The story follows Khai, who is trained in the arts of killing and stealth by a warrior sect in the deep desert. Khai will serve as Shadow to twin Sun-Blessed Zariya. Khai must learn to navigate the Court of the Sun-Blessed and keep Zariya alive in a nest of vipers intent on killing anyone that gets in their way of power. This was a great ending to a fun series. The action picks up shortly after the events in The Silent Shield. The Forbidden Court has been torched and Gahalatine blames Trynne. He accuses her of treachery and issues an ultimatum. Meanwhile, Kingfountain is threatened once again by Morwenna. She will stop at nothing to quench her thirst for revenge and the throne. It’s up to Trynne and Fallon to save the people of their kingdoms, as well as their families. Continue reading “The Forsaken Throne (Kingfountain #6) by Jeff Wheeler”

This was a fun, quick read. The story is set in a world similar to England after WWII. A group of wealthy families control the weather with their unique magical abilities. Miles Singer had an unhappy childhood and was fated to be enslaved by the interests of his family or committed to a witches asylum. All he ever wanted to do was become a doctor and heal people. This was an ok book. The major plot points were pretty predictable, but it was still a fun read. Drystan, Temple Knight of Lyonesse, is sent to retrieve the betrothed of his uncle, the Duke of Tintagel. When Eselt and Drystan meet, there are immediate sparks between the two. As they start the journey back to Tintagel, the couple can’t resist getting together and start a doomed love affair. When they reach the Duke’s house, cruel soldier Purin discovers their affair and is determined to tell the Duke. Meanwhile, two mysterious brothers hunt down a rogue healer that is possessed by a chaos demon. Continue reading “The Fallen by Ravek Hunter”

This was a quick, fun read. It’s a young adult, historical fiction fantasy book. England is suffering from a plague that turns infected people’s body to stone. If the infection spreads enough in the person’s body, it is deadly. Thomas Fawkes is the son of legendary Guy Fawkes. He has been infected with the stone plague in his eye, which he needs to hide from the public. Continue reading “Fawkes by Nadine Brandes”
