I started reading this book before I realized it is book 9 in the Alex Verus book series by the author. I haven’t read any other books in this series, but was still able to follow the storyline and enjoy the book. This was a very good urban fantasy book. I really enjoyed the author’s Kingfountain book series, so am really pleased that he’s started another series to savor. The first 20-25% of this book was very slow and I almost gave up on it. Fortunately, I stuck with it and was not disappointed. The author provides sufficient world-building, although most of the characters other than Kiera are pretty flimsy. Once the action picked up, the story kept my attention. I was also relieved to discover that this is a stand-alone book with a beginning, middle and end. This is a satisfying find in a genre overloaded with trilogies and multiple-book series. Wow. What a great finish to a really fun series. I loved the first books, Illuminae (The Illuminae Files #1) by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff and Gemina (The Illuminae Files #2) by Aime Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. I was very excited to see how the series concluded, but also sad because I didn’t want it to end. Hopefully these authors will conjure up another exciting series for us to read in the future.
Kady, Ezra, Hanna, and Nik successfully defeated the soldiers sent to jump station Heimdall and were able to escape alive. Instead of being able to relax after a grueling battle, they find themselves with 2,000 refugees on the container ship, Mao. The ship is built for a lot less people and resources are scarce. They decide to go back to Kerenza but don’t know what awaits them there, if anything. Adding to their plight, the adults on Mao dismiss the contributions and abilities of our ragtag team, leaving them angry and frustrated. This was a good first book in this new series. There is minimal worldbuilding, but that’s pretty typical for a YA Fantasy book. The main characters are likeable and earnest. This is a great sequel to the first book in the series Nightblade’s Vengeance. The book starts off with a bang and doesn’t slow down. With the kingdom in chaos and on the brink of civil war, the nightblades must choose a side. After the events of the last book, the nightblades are out of favor with the citizens in the Kingdom. This is another series set in the Banished Lands, but about 100 years after the events in The Faithful and the Fallen book series. Most of the Banished Lands is ruled by the Ben-Elim, the warrior angels that helped fight and banish the Kadoshim. As they conquer ancient kingdoms to extend their rule, the Ben-Elim force humans into submission, promising peace in the land. I enjoyed this YA Fantasy dystopian book. It is similar to a lot of other books out there, but it’s still an enjoyable read. I will definitely read the next book in this series.
The nobility run the country and control the population by controlling the jobs they can work, the food they eat and their education. They also control the C.O.I.L.S. of Copper and Brass, which is rumored to have powers to control the amber sky and other elements.
