killing trail

This is the first book in a really good mystery series centered around Deputy Sheriff Mattie Cobb and her K-9 partner Robo. Mattie is fresh out of the K-9 Academy and learning to use Robo in the field and trust his instincts. Their partnership is put to the test when a young high school girl is found murdered in the woods and Mattie uncovers what could possibly be a drug ring in her small town. Time’s Convert by Deborah Harkness

Time's Convert

4 stars

I really enjoyed this book. It’s set in the same world as the All Souls Trilogy books. This book centers on Marcus, Matthew de Clermont’s son, and his fiance Phoebe. The story begins with Marcus’ life as a young boy in rural Massachusetts just before the Revolutionary War. Fleeing an abusive home, he runs away to join the military to fight the British. While there he begins training with various medical doctors and starts tending the troops. During one brutal campaign he meets Matthew in a field hospital. When he later takes ill and is about to die, Matthew offers to make him a vampire, and Marcus accepts. The remainder of the story centers on Marcus’ journey from young vampire to present day. Searching for Terry Punchout by Tyler Hellard

Searching for Terry Punchout

4 stars

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

First of all, any book with hockey as a main theme is already going to get high marks from me. 🙂 I am a HUGE hockey fan (Go Blues!) and there just aren’t enough good books that feature hockey. This is a good, funny and touching book that I really enjoyed reading. I’ve never read anything by this author, but will definitely read more of his books. Vox by Christina Dalcher

Vox

3.5 stars

I learned that once a plan is in place, everything can happen overnight.

The premise of this book is very disturbing. Your rational mind says “this could never happen in the U.S.”. But given the current political climate, there is a tiny voice in the back of your mind that whispers “…right? I mean, it really couldn’t happen, could it?” THAT is the most disturbing thing about this book. That tiny voice that skitters around in your mind while you lay in bed at night trying to fall asleep. Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore (Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore #1) by Robin Sloan

Mr Penumbra

3 stars

This was our Oct. book club pick. Clay lost his job as a web designer when his employer went out of business. Desperate for work, he takes the late shift in a 24 hour book stored called Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. The store only seems to have a few customers who don’t buy books. Rather, they trade one huge mysterious book for another. One of Clay’s duties is to write down every detail about the transaction with the customers, including what they check out, what they are wearing, and what their behavior and mannerisms are. Lethal White (Cormoran Strike #4) by Robert Galbraith

Lethal White

3.5 stars

I really enjoy this book series, but this was my least favorite book so far. The story starts out with a young man named Billy visiting Strike at his office. The man clearly has mental health issues, with paranoid delusions. He insists that when he was a young child he witnessed another child being killed near his home. His story is disjointed and incomplete. Before Strike can find out more, Billy dashes out of Strike’s office. Continue reading “Lethal White (Cormoran Strike #4) by Robert Galbraith”

The Witch of Willow Hall by Hester Fox

The witch of willow hall

3.5 stars

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first gothic historical fiction book I’ve read. The writing was well done and the story was interesting, but I have mixed feelings about this book. It seemed to float between several genres and the story became a bit muddled in the process. Continue reading “The Witch of Willow Hall by Hester Fox”
