Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author but it won’t be the last. The book is a fast-paced, action-packed mystery/thriller that incorporates multiple interconnected plots into one explosive ending.

Defense Attorney Karen Wyatt exposed corruption in the police force and district attorney’s office while getting her client exonerated in court. Afterwards she was set up on fake drug charges, sent to prison, and disbarred until she proved her innocence and was released. She got her law license back and goes back to work, but hasn’t forgotten what happened to her and is determined to find out who set her up.

Three years later Wyatt defends a man accused of a brutal murder, but is he guilty or just a naive patsy? As Wyatt digs into the case she uncovers a pandora’s box of problems. Multiple sub plots intertwine during her investigation, some of them putting her life in danger. I had to really pay attention while I listened to the book so I didn’t miss any clues as I tried to figure out the mystery along with Wyatt. The author adds multiple characters to the complex storylines that include murder, political corruption, aliens (I said what I said), drugs, gangs, and a high-profile trial.

The narrator did a fantastic job distinguishing between the various characters and building tension as the action got intense. I felt like I was in the story as the action happened. The author keeps you guessing throughout the book until the satisfying ending. I loved Wyatt and hope the author features her in another book in the future.

I received a complimentary audiobook of this book from NetGalley and Macmillan Audio. All opinions are my own.
