This is the first book in a new series featuring mild mannered, kind, business genius Walter Nash. He’s got a prestigious job at a financial firm and is good at it. He has a beautiful wife and daughter and is making a good living. After his father’s funeral, he’s approached by the FBI and asked to be their inside man to take down a criminal enterprise that his business is involved in. At the top of this illegal operation is Victoria Steers, an international criminal mastermind that the FBI has been trying to bring down for years.
Walter agrees to work with the FBI, but he’s found out and Steers takes revenge on Walter and his family. So begins Walter’s origin story. He trains to become everything he wasn’t. It’s the only way to bring down Steers and exact his revenge.
This book was a bit different from other books I’ve read by this author. It’s not a bad thing, just different. Although there is action and intrigue, the book is a quiet read. It’s hard to review this one because it was more world building than an actual beginning to end book. It ends on a cliffhanger and I look forward to reading what happens next. I really enjoyed Walter’s transformation, both physically and mentally.
I listened to the audio of this book and the narrators did a great job. This is the first time I’ve listened to a book with multiple narrators and I really liked it. Their voices were so expressive and I felt like I was in the room with them. I was able to completely immerge myself into the story and sped through the book. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book.
I received a complimentary audio of this book from Hachette Audio, Grand Central Publishing and NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
