This is a twisty mystery thriller about a very private woman living in London that feels like someone is following her. And they are – and planning to kill her.
Nell has a secret past that she changed her name to hide. She limits her social circle and holds back her secrets from her new partner Alex. Nell can’t shake the feeling that someone is following her and she wonders if it has something to do with her past. Before she was Nell, she was Elle. She witnessed a student entering a stranger’s car who later turned up dead. She was convinced she knew who’s car the girl entered and was obsessed with proving to the police, and herself, that she was right. Her obsession turned dangerous and she fled that life to escape her decisions.
The narrator did a great job building tension in the story. I could feel Nell’s unease and fear as she tried to decide if she was being stalked, or if it was just her guilty conscience coming to light. If she is being stalked, is it because of her past, or is this something new? As she learns more disturbing information about Alex’s past, and other friend’s in her orbit, she begins to spiral trying to decide who could be following her, and why.
The book follows not only Nell’s POV, but also contains narration from the stalker’s journal, which is super creepy and very effective at building tension in the story.
The book has plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing and is an fun, enjoyable read.
I received a complimentary audio copy of this book from NetGalley and Macmillan Audio. All opinions are my own.
