Rating: 4 out of 5.

Meryn struggles to take care of her family in the slums. When her little sister is kidnapped and taken across the border by the immortal monsters her country has been fighting for centuries, she enlists in the army. She’s determined to head to the front, slip across the border and rescue her sister. What she didn’t anticipate was having to participate in the deadly Bonded Trials, the test to bond with a direwolf.

Meryn has no desire to bond with a direwolf, but finds herself living and training in the castle and bonded to a feral direwolf that refuses to communicate with her. She’s trained by Stark, one of the alpha bonded warriors. He is dangerous and deadly and seems to have it out for her.

Everyone is out to get her because she’s a commoner and it will take everything she has to survive the training.

Meryn is one tough bad as* bitch and I love her!! She does what she has to survive and doesn’t apologize. She is determined to suffer whatever she has to in order to get to the front to save her sister. Her single-minded fervor gets her into trouble, but there is no way she’s going to show weakness to anyone. When she starts interacting with the crown prince, the target on her back gets even bigger. The side characters fill the story out and helped propel it along, without distracting from the main plot. It’s hard to write too much without spoilers. Let me just say, I can’t wait read the next book!

I received a complimentary e-book copy from Toppling Stacks Tours and the author. All opinions are my own.
