Monstre: Volume One by Duncan Swan

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Holy hell – what did I just read?? This is a fantastic first book in a new apocalyptic Science Fiction/Horror book series. It has an explosive beginning (literally) and doesn’t let up until the frenetic cliffhanger ending.

Tools of Engagement (Hot & Hammered, #3) by Tessa Bailey

Rating: 3 out of 5.

This was a cute and easy Contemporary Romance that is the last book in a series. I have not read the first two books, but this can be read as a stand alone so it’s no problem to start with this one. I’m sure I missed a little bit of context, but overall, it did not affect my enjoyment of the book.

Her Last Flight by Beatriz Williams

Rating: 3 out of 5.

This was our September book club choice. This is a slow, quiet story about a young woman’s search to write the biography of forgotten aviation pioneer Sam Mallory, who joined the loyalist forces in the Spanish Civil War and never returned.

The Lost and Found Bookshop by Susan Wiggs

The Silvered Serpents (The Gilded Wolves #2) by Roshani Chokshi

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This was a fantastic second book in this YAFantasy series. This book definitely does not suffer from the notorious “second book slump” and there is little to no “filler” that is typically stuffed into second books.

Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is an entertaining, funny romp through the apocalypse with S.T., a fowl-mouthed crow, and his owner’s trusty dim-witted dog, Dennis.

The Immortal Words (The Grave Kingdom #3) by Jeff Wheeler

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is a satisfying ending to an exciting fantasy series.

Before the Crown by Flora Harding

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is an entertaining historical fiction that imagines the events between Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in the years before they married.

Act Like You’re Having a Good Time: Essays by Michele Weldon

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This was an interesting collection of essays about things a “woman of a certain age” has to deal with every day. Often discarded by society and invisible to anyone over 25, women over 50 are often times lumped together as “old ladies” that are irrelevant and who can no longer contribute to society. Being one of these “old ladies”, I found a lot of truths in several of the author’s essays, whether I want to admit it or not.
