An Anonymous Girl by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen

an anonymous girl4 stars

This was a very good psychological thriller. The plot was interesting, the action was fast-paced and there are characters you can love and hate. The book is a quick read and I had a hard time putting it down. Continue reading “An Anonymous Girl by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen”

A pretty good mystery/thriller. Continue reading “Broken Ground (Inspector Karen Pirie, #5) by Val McDermid”

Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield

Once upon a river

4 stars

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is a hard book to describe. It’s part folktale, part mystery, part romance and part magical fairy tale. The story starts off slowly, but stick with it. As it unwinds, the pace picks up until its tragic, but wonderful, ending.

During a dark midwinter’s night in a small inn by the Thames river, the regulars are entertaining themselves by telling stories. A badly injured stranger bursts through the door carrying a little dead girl. After the healer tends to the injured stranger, she inspects the body of the little girl and discovers she’s alive. The regulars speculate as to how the little girl could be alive. Is it a miracle, magic, science or something else? Continue reading “Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield”

Stalking Ground (Timber Creek K-9 Mystery #2) by Margaret Mizushima

4 stars

Another good book in this mystery series.

Deputy Sheriff Brody’s girlfriend Adrienne goes missing and Mattie and her K-9 partner Robo are called in to conduct a search. As the search intensifies, Mattie and Robo eventually find the girl’s dead body in the mountains just as a snow storm hits the area. Mattie and Robo must guard the body while Brody hikes back down the mountain for help. Veterinarian Cole Walker hikes up to take supplies to Mattie and help keep her safe while they wait for the rest of team. Killing Trail (Timber Creek K-9 Mystery, #1) by Margaret Mizushima

killing trail

4 stars

This is the first book in a really good mystery series centered around Deputy Sheriff Mattie Cobb and her K-9 partner Robo. Mattie is fresh out of the K-9 Academy and learning to use Robo in the field and trust his instincts. Their partnership is put to the test when a young high school girl is found murdered in the woods and Mattie uncovers what could possibly be a drug ring in her small town. Silent in the Sanctuary (Lady Julia Grey #2) by Deanna Raybourn

Silent in the Sanctuary

4 stars

This is another good book in the Lady Julia Grey mystery series. When the book opens, Julia has been in Italy for the last 6 months with two of her brothers. She and her brothers are summoned back to their home in England by their father. When they arrive, they find the home filled with family and guests. Among the guests is Nicholas Brisbane – the one person she was trying to forget. Not only has he been elevated to a Lord, but he’s engaged to be wed. Lethal White (Cormoran Strike #4) by Robert Galbraith

Lethal White

3.5 stars

I really enjoy this book series, but this was my least favorite book so far. The story starts out with a young man named Billy visiting Strike at his office. The man clearly has mental health issues, with paranoid delusions. He insists that when he was a young child he witnessed another child being killed near his home. His story is disjointed and incomplete. Before Strike can find out more, Billy dashes out of Strike’s office. Continue reading “Lethal White (Cormoran Strike #4) by Robert Galbraith”

Burning Ridge (Timber Creek K-9 Mystery #4) by Margaret Mizushima

Burning Ridge

4 stars

This is another great book in the Timber Creek K-9 Mystery series. The author delves deeper into Mattie’s relationship with veterinarian Cole and others in her community, but there is still plenty of action and mystery to keep the reader interested. Continue reading “Burning Ridge (Timber Creek K-9 Mystery #4) by Margaret Mizushima”

Dark Tide Rising (William Monk #24) by Anne Perry

dark tide rising 2

4 stars

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first Commander William Monk book I’ve read, and although this is the 24th book in this series, I was able to enjoy the book without having read any of the other books. There was enough information given about the characters to understand what was going on, even if I didn’t perhaps know all of the relevant information.

In this book, Commander Monk is asked to assist a distraught husband whose wife has been kidnapped and ransomed. Monk agrees to help the husband drop the money off to the kidnappers and retrieve the wife. When the hand-off goes horribly wrong and the wife is murdered and the money stolen, Monk fears that one of his own men betrayed their plans and caused the wife’s death.
