Burning Ridge (Timber Creek K-9 Mystery #4) by Margaret Mizushima

Burning Ridge

4 stars

This is another great book in the Timber Creek K-9 Mystery series. The author delves deeper into Mattie’s relationship with veterinarian Cole and others in her community, but there is still plenty of action and mystery to keep the reader interested. Dark Tide Rising (William Monk #24) by Anne Perry

dark tide rising 2

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first Commander William Monk book I’ve read, and although this is the 24th book in this series, I was able to enjoy the book without having read any of the other books. There was enough information given about the characters to understand what was going on, even if I didn’t perhaps know all of the relevant information.

In this book, Commander Monk is asked to assist a distraught husband whose wife has been kidnapped and ransomed. Monk agrees to help the husband drop the money off to the kidnappers and retrieve the wife. When the hand-off goes horribly wrong and the wife is murdered and the money stolen, Monk fears that one of his own men betrayed their plans and caused the wife’s death. Starless by Jacqueline Carey

Starless

4 stars

Another great book by this author. Unlike most of her books, this is a stand alone book which was a nice change of pace. This isn’t my favorite book of hers, but since I like her writing so much I was still thrilled to read it.

The story follows Khai, who is trained in the arts of killing and stealth by a warrior sect in the deep desert. Khai will serve as Shadow to twin Sun-Blessed Zariya. Khai must learn to navigate the Court of the Sun-Blessed and keep Zariya alive in a nest of vipers intent on killing anyone that gets in their way of power. This was an ok book. Luc Flanders is a college student living a double life. He’s a total “bro” with his college friends and girlfriend, but he’s secretly in love with an older man whom he sneaks off to see as often as possible. After a night of playing hockey with friends, Luc disappears. The police are torn between deciding if Luc ran off on his own and is simply laying low to avoid friends and family, or if he met with foul play. The police suspect several people of having knowledge of Luc’s whereabouts and condition, including Luc’s college friends and girlfriend, two juice-head twins selling performance enhancers, and his older lover. This is a very good, quick read. The story and characters grab your attention from the start. Nineteen year old Sadie and her younger sister Mattie have had a very rough life. Their mother suffers from alcohol and drug addiction and subjects the girls to a series of deadbeat boyfriends. When Sadie’s mother abandons the girls, Sadie is tasked with raising Mattie. But Mattie longs for her mother and the girls’ relationship begins to strain. When Mattie is found dead, Sadie’s world falls apart. Continue reading “Sadie by Courtney Summers”

Another great book from this author! It is a quick and easy read with plenty of suspense and twists and turns to keep you turning the pages until the very end. The story is compelling and the characters are interesting. Even when you think you’ve figured the mystery out, you’re not quite sure you know the truth. The Fallen (Amos Decker #4) by David Baldacci

the fallen (baldacci)

Another great Amos Decker novel. This time Amos and his partner Alex are visiting Alex’s sister in a small, dying town called Baronville. Her sister moved there because her husband got a job in the new fulfillment center in town. The town’s economy is crumbling and it has a rampant opioid addiction problem. This was a great ending to a fun series. The action picks up shortly after the events in The Silent Shield. The Forbidden Court has been torched and Gahalatine blames Trynne. He accuses her of treachery and issues an ultimatum. Meanwhile, Kingfountain is threatened once again by Morwenna. She will stop at nothing to quench her thirst for revenge and the throne. It’s up to Trynne and Fallon to save the people of their kingdoms, as well as their families. Continue reading “The Forsaken Throne (Kingfountain #6) by Jeff Wheeler”
