The Funny Thing About Norman Forman by Julietta Henderson

Twelve year old Norman and his best friend Jax are a comedy duo whose 5 year plan is to debut their act at the Edinburgh Fringe comedy festival. Then Jax dies. To overcome his grief and honor Jax, Norman decides he has to perform at the festival himself. The problem is that Jax was the funny one, not Norman. Norman also decides it’s time to meet his father and convinces his mother Sadie to embark on a journey to find his dad and perform at the festival. They are aided by Sadie’s co-worker and they all learn a lot about themselves, and each other, along the way.

This is a cute contemporary romance. The story revolves around a wedding planning business and the people that come within their sphere. For 20 years married couple Liv and Eliot have run a successful wedding planning business. Eliot dies suddenly and to Liv’s surprise, leaves his half of the business to his young girlfriend Savannah. After getting off to a rocky start, Liv and Savannah start making a go of the business. The story follows Liv and Savannah as they move through grief and learn to love again. The book also follows other diverse couples as their relationships change and grow.

Black Buck by Mateo Askaripour

I love this book. It starts off slowly, setting the scene and giving the reader a glimpse into Darren’s safe, predictable life working as a shift manager at Starbucks and spending time with his mother and girlfriend. One day he gets recruited to be a salesperson in an elite, cut-throat start-up company, and that’s when the pace of the book takes off and doesn’t slow down until the end. Darren is the only African American person in the company, and his supervisor nicknames him “Buck”. The running “joke” throughout the book is that various colleagues tell him he looks like one or another African American actor. Buck is taken under the wing of the company CEO and once he begins work, the two become close.

My overall feeling about this contemporary romance book is a solid “meh”. It’s not the worst I’ve read, but I won’t remember what this book is about in a week. The writing is fine, but the two characters aren’t interesting, the romance is very clunky and the side plots kind of ridiculous.
