4 stars
This emotional mystery/thriller about a woman’s downward spiral after the kidnapping of her 4 year old son, and the crumbling of her 20 year marriage, will suck you in and not let go until the end. I loved the author’s previous book, Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier, so was thrilled when I got the chance to read and review this book.
Marin and Derek appear to have it all. Both have successful businesses and live a happy life with their four year old son Sebastian. That is, until one day at a market Sebastian is taken. One year later all police and FBI leads have dried up, Marin and Derek barely speak, and a PI Marin hired to find her son discovers that Derek is having an affair with a young woman that may know something about Sebastian’s disappearance. Marin is finally sparked to take action and get her life back, but isn’t prepared for the depth of betrayals she will uncover.
The writing in this book is effortless and a joy to read. The story sucked me in and I found myself reading the book in one sitting. The story itself isn’t necessarily that original, but the author’s ability to develop characters and capture and hold the reader’s attention with the story development is why this book is not your average ho-hum mystery/thriller.
The book is a quick read. It’s told in short chapters that beg the reader to read “just one more chapter” before they turn out the light. In my case, I ended up reading “just one more chapter” to the satisfying end. Is this the “end all, be all” in mystery writing? No. But, it’s a good, satisfying book that you will be glad you read. I recommend you add this book to your TBR shelf.
I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
