This is a very good contemporary mystery/thriller set in the Washington D.C. area. Avery is a therapist that lost her license. Since then, she’s developed a 10 step treatment method and has been using it to counsel those in crisis. She meets new clients Marissa and Matthew Bishop, a young couple that seems to have it all. But Marissa was unfaithful and she is desperate to repair her marriage, not only because she doesn’t want to lose her husband, but for the sake of their 8 year old son.
Understandably Matthew is upset about the infidelity but agrees to work with Avery to save the marriage. But Avery’s approach to therapy is much different than traditional therapists, and she slowly starts to infiltrate the Bishop’s life to uncover all of their secrets. The more information she finds, the more complicated the situation becomes. As friends, family and enemies alternatively come under suspicion as more information comes to light, no one could imagine the amount of true danger they all end up in.
Once again, this writing duo hits us with a gripping, exciting story that grabs your attention from the beginning and doesn’t let go until the explosive ending. The authors do a great job of building tension throughout the book and literally everyone in the book is suspected of doing something shady at one point or another. There are secrets upon secrets to uncover and the connections that are made at the end of the book are pretty crazy. The main characters are fairly well developed, and the minor characters are developed enough to support the main characters and move the story forward. The story bogged down a little bit in the middle, but it picked up again and didn’t slow down until the end. I always enjoy this duo’s writing and this book did not disappoint.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press. All opinions are my own.
