This book is so darn cute!! I’ve never read this author before and so my expectations were low, but this book blew me away. I love it when that happens!

Learned Edmund is a scholar that’s lost hope that his temple will ever change and make progress. He sets out on his last delivery to another temple, vowing to himself that he’ll never return. He’s set upon by bandits and as he falls to the ground, reaches out for the sword he’s transporting and the sheath comes off. Imagine his surprise when an alarmingly handsome man appears, wielding daggers of blue steel. He quickly kills the bandits and informs Edmund his name is the Dervish. He’s an immortal warrior trapped for centuries in a sword of enchanted steel and Edmund is his new wielder. Dervish hates being trapped and has hated all of his selfish, cruel wielders. But Edmund is different. He’s sweet, clever, and kind.

Edmund hasn’t met a stranger, and before you know it, the duo have a motley crew of sentient species joining them on their journey. Edmund is convinced he can find a way to break the Dervish’s curse, but the more they look into the cure, the more trouble the group gets in.

In the beginning Edmund is meek and unassuming – he’s kind and always puts others ahead of himself. But sometimes that means people walk all over Edmund, which ticks the Dervish. His quiet support and encouragement helps bring Edmund out of his shell and gives him much needed confidence. The Dervish and Edmund are attracted to each other, but fight it for far too long. It was cute to see them both be so unsure of themselves and shy about their relationship. The Dervish was so funny because he was full of bravado and strutted around acting like nothing bothered him and he had no feelings. But he couldn’t help notice Edmund – and his kindness – and how handsome he is – and even though the Dervish was lying to himself, everyone knew that he cared about Edmund.

The quest was interesting and had plenty of twists, turns, and bad guys. The book came to a satisfying ending, with a cliffhanger that nicely sets up the next book in the series.

I haven’t read the first book in the series and didn’t feel like I missed out on too much because of it. However, this book was so cute I’m definitely going back to read it.
