Scones and Scoundrels (Highland Bookshop Mystery #2) by Molly MacRae

Scones and Scoundrels

3 stars – released 1-2-18

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is the second book in the series. I haven’t read the first book, but didn’t feel like I missed too many things because of that. There were enough references to the last book to fill in the missing pieces. This was a fun, easy, quick “cozy” mystery read. I’ve only read a couple of these kinds of books so don’t have a large frame of reference, but this book was pretty good. Forget Me Not (Detective Jess Bishop, #1) by Kierney Scott

Forget me Not

2 stars

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first book in a series about a homicide detective with a horrible past. She is tasked with investigating a serial killer that dismembers bodies and keeps the heads as trophies. The crimes span several states and the team has almost ne leads. The crimes bring up bad memories for Jess and when her former partner returns from a long undercover assignment, she begins to spiral out of control. Unraveling Oliver by Liz Nugent

Unraveling oliver

3.5 stars

This was a pretty good debut book by this author. Not outstanding, but a solid book. The story begins with a terrible act of violence. Oliver, a handsome, successful children’s book author hits his wife Alice and watches as she cowers on the floor. He dispassionately watches her reaction to his assault, and then leaves the house to get drunk. Hours later he returns to the house and is confronted by Alice with secrets from his past. Oliver proceeds to mercilessly beat Alice into a coma. Continue reading “Unraveling Oliver by Liz Nugent”

Nightblade’s Vengeance (Blades of the Fallen #1) by Ryan Kirk

Nightblades Vengeance

4 stars

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest opinion.

This is a really good start to a new fantasy series. This is the first book that I’ve read by this author, but certainly won’t be the last. The story is set in a “Kingdom” that reminds me of feudal China or Japan. The King is sick and dying with no heir. Members from the three ruling families sit on the King’s Council. Each family tries to maneuver to take over the throne upon the King’s death. Continue reading “Nightblade’s Vengeance (Blades of the Fallen #1) by Ryan Kirk”

Warcross (Warcross #1) by Marie Lu

Warcross

4.5 stars

Wow. What a great book! I LOVED the Legends book series but was pretty disappointed in the Young Elites series, so I am relieved that the author I loved from the Legends series is back.

Warcross is a game that has taken over the world. Millions of people spend all of their free time in the virtual world, while others use it to try to make money. As with most things, there is also a dark side. Emika Chen, a teenage hacker, struggles to make ends meet by working as a bounty hunter tracking down people that illegally gamble on Warcross. Facing eviction, Emika takes a chance and hacks herself into the International Warcross Championships, a world-wide event watched by millions. Once in the game, however, something goes wrong and she enters the action of the game. Her identity is out and she becomes an overnight sensation. The Guilty (Will Robie #4) by David Baldacci

The guilty

4 stars

This is another great Will Robie book. When a mission goes awry, Will is forced to take a step back and try to get his head straight. He needs to figure out if he can continue working for the government. One way to do this is to make peace with his past, which he is reluctant to do. Will is estranged from his father and hasn’t returned to his home town since he left just after high school. When he learns that his father has been arrested for murder, Will returns to his small southern town to confront his past and help his father. Weave a Circle Round by Kari Maaren

This book was hard to rate. The writing is good, but the story didn’t interest me. The story centers on Freddy, a young girl that tries very hard not to be noticed. Her sister Mel is very confidant and brilliant. Her stepbrother Roland is deaf and not a fan of Freddy. He spends most of his time avoiding her and creating roleplaying games for his group of friends. Continue reading “Weave a Circle Round by Kari Maaren”

Glass Houses by Louise Penny

Glass Houses

This is another great book in this series. Inspector Gamache is just settling into his job as the head of the police department when he discovers that they have lost the war on drugs. Huge cartels are funneling vast quantities of drugs into Canada and the U.S. and the various crimes that flow from the drug traffic has increased. Gamache is at a lost on how to stop it, until he develops a bold plan that will have huge consequences whether he wins of fails. He enlists a few trusted people to help with the plan and sets in in place. Continue reading “Glass Houses by Louise Penny”
