This is the first book in a trilogy about witches in New Orleans. Magic is failing. Some witches accept this harsh truth, while others scramble doing despicable things to retain their power. Alice Marin was shipped off to an asylum by her family and hasn’t seen them in years. She is finally allowed to return home after a death in the family. Once home, she uses her last bits of magic to investigate other missing witches and occult figures in the community. The more Alice digs, the more information she learns about her troubled family. This is a good first book in a new sci-fi series by two great authors. The earth is dying. When a message is received from a long-extinct alien race it seems the very thing that could save the planet. Their technology helps un-do some of the earth’s environmental damage, as well as provides energy to power entire cities. Front Lines (Front Lines #1) by Michael Grant

I really liked this book and had a hard time putting it down. While some people have said that the story is slow, I didn’t find it that way. I think it is well-paced, with plenty of action. I loved this book. It’s both heartbreaking and hopeful. It draws you in and you won’t want to put the book down.

I really enjoyed the first book in the series and was nervous that the second book wouldn’t be as good. I shouldn’t have been concerned because this book was just as good as the first. The story picks up shortly after Daleina is made queen. She has grown into her new role and is keeping the humans in her country safe from the spirits. When it finally seems that Daleina can relax for a moment, she suddenly falls ill and discovers she is dying. This book had an interesting premise, but ultimately I didn’t find it enjoyable. It’s set in a graveyard the night that Lincoln’s young son Willie is buried. The story takes place in one night and is a series of conversations between ghosts that are trying to encourage Willie to “move on” from the graveyard.
