The King of Bones and Ashes (Witches of New Orleans #1) by J.D. Horn

king of bones and ashes

2.5 Stars

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first book in a trilogy about witches in New Orleans. Magic is failing. Some witches accept this harsh truth, while others scramble doing despicable things to retain their power. Alice Marin was shipped off to an asylum by her family and hasn’t seen them in years. She is finally allowed to return home after a death in the family. Once home, she uses her last bits of magic to investigate other missing witches and occult figures in the community. The more Alice digs, the more information she learns about her troubled family. Unearthed (Unearthed #1) by Aime Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

unearthed

4 stars

This is a good first book in a new sci-fi series by two great authors. The earth is dying. When a message is received from a long-extinct alien race it seems the very thing that could save the planet. Their technology helps un-do some of the earth’s environmental damage, as well as provides energy to power entire cities. Front Lines (Front Lines #1) by Michael Grant

front lines

4.5 stars

I really liked this book and had a hard time putting it down. While some people have said that the story is slow, I didn’t find it that way. I think it is well-paced, with plenty of action. The story kept my interest and I can’t wait to read the rest of the books in the series. Continue reading “Front Lines (Front Lines #1) by Michael Grant”

The Child Finder by Rene Denfeld

the child finder

4.5 Stars

I loved this book. It’s both heartbreaking and hopeful. It draws you in and you won’t want to put the book down.

Naomi was once a “lost girl” and managed to escape her captors. Haunted by her past and frustrated with her inability to remember what happened to her, she earns a living as a private investigator tracking down lost and missing children. Her relentless determination in pursuing the children earns her the nickname “The Child Finder”. Continue reading “The Child Finder by Rene Denfeld”

Poison’s Kiss (Poison’s Kiss #1) by Breeana Shields

Poison's kiss

3 stars

This is an ok book. Marinda is a visha kanya, a poison maiden. Her kiss is deadly and she is trained from a young age to be an assassin for the good of the country. While she doesn’t like what she does, she knows that if she resists, her little brother Mani will not get the life-saving treatment her handler gives him. When she is told to kill a boy that she’s fallen in love with, however, Marinda begins to question her orders. Continue reading “Poison’s Kiss (Poison’s Kiss #1) by Breeana Shields”

A year later his mother is abusing drugs and alcohol and in an abusive relationship with the town big shot. He’s lost most of his friends and is an outcast. The Reluctant Queen (Queens of Renthia, #2) by Sarah Beth Durst

the reluctant queen

4 stars

I really enjoyed the first book in the series and was nervous that the second book wouldn’t be as good. I shouldn’t have been concerned because this book was just as good as the first. The story picks up shortly after Daleina is made queen. She has grown into her new role and is keeping the humans in her country safe from the spirits. When it finally seems that Daleina can relax for a moment, she suddenly falls ill and discovers she is dying. If she dies without an heir, the spirits will rip her country apart and kill all of its citizens. Continue reading “The Reluctant Queen (Queens of Renthia, #2) by Sarah Beth Durst”

Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders

Lincoln in the Bardo

2 stars

This book had an interesting premise, but ultimately I didn’t find it enjoyable. It’s set in a graveyard the night that Lincoln’s young son Willie is buried. The story takes place in one night and is a series of conversations between ghosts that are trying to encourage Willie to “move on” from the graveyard. Continue reading “Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders”

A Mortal Likeness (Victorian Mystery #2) by Larah Joh Rowland

A mortal Likeness

3 stars

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is the second book in a series, but is a stand-alone mystery. You don’t have to have read the first book (which I haven’t) to enjoy this book. This was a fairly entertaining murder mystery. Continue reading “A Mortal Likeness (Victorian Mystery #2) by Larah Joh Rowland”
