The other woman

4 stars (release date August 21, 2018)

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This was a good, quick read. It has plenty of twists and turns and is an interesting story. Emily meets Adam and thinks he’s the perfect man. Soon after they meet they plunge head-long into a serious relationship. After only a few months they’ve moved in together. Everything is perfect – except Adam’s mother Pammie. This was a fun, quick read. The story is set in a world similar to England after WWII. A group of wealthy families control the weather with their unique magical abilities. Miles Singer had an unhappy childhood and was fated to be enslaved by the interests of his family or committed to a witches asylum. All he ever wanted to do was become a doctor and heal people. Miles fakes his own death, runs away and joins the military, who put him through medical school. Right after he finishes his training, war breaks out between Aeland and Laneer and Miles is sent to the front. Continue reading “Witchmark (Witchmark #1) by C.L. Polk”

Us Against You (Beartown #2) by Fredrik Backman

Us Against You

5 stars

WOW. Fredrik Backman has done it again with his sequel to the book Beartown. What an amazing book. I started this book at 10pm and literally could not put it down. I didn’t stop reading until 9am the next morning when I finished the book.

Beartown is a hockey town in the forest of Sweden. After the town was shattered by the events in Beartown, the town must decide how it will go on after they are told that their beloved hockey team will be disbanded. To add insult to injury, most of their talented players and their successful coach have decided to play for their arch rival team in Hed. Never again do you find friends like the ones you have when you’re fifteen years old.

Beartown is a small town deep in the forest. People say it’s dying. That people should just give up and move on to bigger and better towns. But despite their history of losing, the people of Beartown are hopeful. Tomorrow the Beartown Ice Hockey Club’s junior hockey team plays in the semifinals of the country’s biggest youth hockey tournament. Hockey is like a religion to the citizens of Beartown, and the team actually has a chance to win this year. Continue reading “Beartown (Beartown #1) by Fredrik Backman”

Silent in the Grave (Lady Julia Grey #1) by Deanna Raybourn

silent in the grave

4 stars

This is the first book in a historical mystery series set in the late 1880s in London. In the first book we meet Lady Julia Grey. She is a lady in her late 20’s unhappily married to her childhood friend, Sir Edward Grey. She comes from an aristocratic family, one of nine siblings. While at a dinner party in their home, Edward collapses and dies. Continue reading “Silent in the Grave (Lady Julia Grey #1) by Deanna Raybourn”

Silver Stars (Front Lines, #2) by Michael Grant

silver stars

4.5 Stars

I love this book series!! The second book is just as good as the first. The story picks up shortly after the events of Front Lines. It’s the summer of 1943. The American forces have now set their sights on Sicily and Italy. Frangie, Rainy, and Rio are no longer green soldiers. Each one knows the horror of combat and the lengths they will go to save themselves and their fellow soldiers. While North Africa was bad, the upcoming battles will be so much worse. Women soldiers are becoming a symbol for equality, with the three women leading the way.

The story is so compelling and I couldn’t put it down. I found myself reading late into the night. If you haven’t started reading this series, do so now!!

Lies You Never Told Me by Jennifer Donaldson

Lies yu never told me

4 stars

I received a free sneak-peek of the first few chapters of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is an interesting and intriguing YA book. The story follows two main characters that have never met, but share a similar misfortune in falling for the wrong people.

Quiet, shy Elyse is cast as the lead in the school play. She is not used to the spotlight and her insecurities make her vulnerable. Gabe is dating a headstrong popular girl that treats him poorly. He tries to break up with her, but she’s having none of that. Just when the story was heating up, I ran out of chapters.

I’m definitely intrigued enough to want to read the rest of the book. I will complete this review once I do.

Shelter: Tales of the Aftermath by Dave Hutchinson

Shelter

3.5 stars

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The Sisters were two asteroids that struck the earth and almost annihilated the entire world. For almost a century storms ravaged the earth, making survival barely possible. In England pockets of survivors eek out a living in small communities. Most modern technology has not survived and the remnants of resources that remained after the asteroid strike are nearly gone. As civilization tries to rebuild, different tyrants emerge and cause chaos. In a small area of the country two strong families are at war and hundreds of people die in the ensuing battles. The Rooster Bar by John Grisham

the rooster bar

2.5 stars

Meh. I usually like Grisham’s novels, but this one was not one of his best. I think perhaps the well is finally running dry. The book started ok, but quickly fizzled out. None of the characters were likeable, the plot and dialog was absurd and the story was not compelling. I really couldn’t believe this was a John Grisham book.
