The Child Finder by Rene Denfeld

the child finder

4.5 Stars

I loved this book. It’s both heartbreaking and hopeful. It draws you in and you won’t want to put the book down.

Naomi was once a “lost girl” and managed to escape her captors. Haunted by her past and frustrated with her inability to remember what happened to her, she earns a living as a private investigator tracking down lost and missing children. Her relentless determination in pursuing the children earns her the nickname “The Child Finder”. Continue reading “The Child Finder by Rene Denfeld”

A Mortal Likeness (Victorian Mystery #2) by Larah Joh Rowland

A mortal Likeness

3 stars

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is the second book in a series, but is a stand-alone mystery. You don’t have to have read the first book (which I haven’t) to enjoy this book. This was a fairly entertaining murder mystery. Continue reading “A Mortal Likeness (Victorian Mystery #2) by Larah Joh Rowland”

Operator Down (Pike Logan #12) by Brad Taylor

Operator Down

3 stars

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is a very fast-paced, action intensive book. Pike Logan and his team are tracking an illegal arms dealer in Tel Aviv. They stumble upon an attempt to kill one of their friends, ex-Israeli agent Shoshana. After thwarting the attempt, they discover that her husband Aaron is missing after conducting an operation looking into a scheme in the Israeli Diamond Exchange. This leads them to uncover a conspiracy to overthrow a democratic government in Africa. Continue reading “Operator Down (Pike Logan #12) by Brad Taylor”

Scones and Scoundrels (Highland Bookshop Mystery #2) by Molly MacRae

Scones and Scoundrels

3 stars – released 1-2-18

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is the second book in the series. I haven’t read the first book, but didn’t feel like I missed too many things because of that. There were enough references to the last book to fill in the missing pieces. This was a fun, easy, quick “cozy” mystery read. I’ve only read a couple of these kinds of books so don’t have a large frame of reference, but this book was pretty good. This is the first book in a series about a homicide detective with a horrible past. She is tasked with investigating a serial killer that dismembers bodies and keeps the heads as trophies. The crimes span several states and the team has almost ne leads. The crimes bring up bad memories for Jess and when her former partner returns from a long undercover assignment, she begins to spiral out of control. Unraveling Oliver by Liz Nugent

Unraveling oliver

3.5 stars

This was a pretty good debut book by this author. Not outstanding, but a solid book. The story begins with a terrible act of violence. Oliver, a handsome, successful children’s book author hits his wife Alice and watches as she cowers on the floor. He dispassionately watches her reaction to his assault, and then leaves the house to get drunk. Hours later he returns to the house and is confronted by Alice with secrets from his past. Oliver proceeds to mercilessly beat Alice into a coma. Continue reading “Unraveling Oliver by Liz Nugent”

The Guilty (Will Robie #4) by David Baldacci

The guilty

This is another great Will Robie book. When a mission goes awry, Will is forced to take a step back and try to get his head straight. He needs to figure out if he can continue working for the government. One way to do this is to make peace with his past, which he is reluctant to do. Will is estranged from his father and hasn’t returned to his home town since he left just after high school. When he learns that his father has been arrested for murder, Will returns to his small southern town to confront his past and help his father. This is another great book in this series. Inspector Gamache is just settling into his job as the head of the police department when he discovers that they have lost the war on drugs.
